Continuing to share insights from #ClimateWeek— highlighting an enlightening event hosted by RMI last Fri., focusing on innovative financial mechanisms to mobilize capital for climate solutions. The event showcased how—by clearly defining the role of each actor (philanthropy, local public sector, global public sector, private sector etc.) and developing coherent financial instruments—we can scale climate capital to meet the 2030 goals. Some key takeaways include: 1. Philanthropy as a catalyst: Philanthropic capital can attract larger pools of funding from private and public sectors by assuming a new role in the ecosystem as the "de-risking" actor for others, even if it means rethinking ROI potential for others. 2. The importance of understanding the entire capital stack: From grants to market-rate capital, comprehending the flow of money is crucial for unlocking climate solutions and allowing each actor to come in at the right place in the stack for their financial and social ROI expectations. 3. Innovation through simplicity: Adapting successful financial models from other sectors and geographies can lead to breakthroughs in climate finance, leading with tech innovation alongside financial innovation. 4. Focus on implementation: Moving beyond announcements to on-the-ground execution is critical for real impact. A COP announcement is nice, but only implementation will actually move the needle. At times, this requires a funding + technical assistance package, as one or the other is simply not enough. 5. Unlocking local capital: Even in challenging markets, there's potential to mobilize local funds through strategic use of philanthropic capital. This is especially true in areas where the climate crisis is already a reality. We can all learn from the great work led by many of the Caribbean islands. #ClimateAction: Science Based Targets Initiative CEO to step down "The announcement follows criticism of Amaral and the SBTi leadership team from its staff and a group of #climate experts after the board of trustees announced in April a plan to allow companies to offset greenhouse gas emissions from their supply chain with carbon credits. Supporters said the move was crucial to help encourage ambitious companies to decarbonise faster, while critics said it was more important to stop emitting in the first place, something offsetting could discourage. After the original board announcement, a number of SBTi staff called for Amaral to resign, while various groups sent letters in support of both sides of the argument, which prompted the board to clarify its position. Holger Hoffmann-Riem from Swiss NGO Go for Impact, who is also a member of the SBTi Technnical Advisory Group (TAG), said the credibility of SBTi had suffered tremendously since its board said it would allow the use of carbon credits. "For SBTi to regain its credibility, we need a fresh start, with a new board, a new governance structure, and a new CEO," he said. Kaya Axelsson, research fellow at Oxford who is also a member of the TAG, said Amaral's resignation did not alleviate concerns about SBTi's board governance. Once these issues are addressed, SBTi could still play a key role in incentivising companies to meet their net zero targets and to contribute to decarbonising the global economy, she added. "Now is not the time to abandon ship on SBTi," she said. At the time of Amaral's resignation, the SBTi staff were in the process of analysing responses to a public consultation on the use of offsets that was undertaken last year, with the results due to be delivered in July. I was just reflecting on how easy it is to be overwhelmed by the enormity of the challenge that is climate change. It can feel out of our individual control. Sometimes it feels just too enormous to contemplate, even for the most determined amongst us. Yet, across diverse communities and landscapes there are many, many individual projects and initiatives bringing people together to collaborate and innovate. In my corner of the world, I see projects developing novel solutions and effecting real change. In the last few weeks, for me, this has included young companies with interesting climate-tech solutions, investors supporting nature-positive approaches, organisations focused on sustainability, the practical demonstration of nature-based solutions and a wide range of organisations engaged in a rigorous, nuanced debate. Underpinning these is a desire to create real evidence-based results and impact. So let’s celebrate the positive steps. What projects do you know that are doing great things and making the future (and our day) better? It is wonderful to be able to support these game changing clean tec and sustainablity startups with our partners at Green Future Investments Ltd. The six successful projects were: BravelyCultured: analysing new biosurfactants from marine microorganisms using advanced methods. These biosurfactants are eco-friendly and offer natural alternatives to petroleum-based surfactants in cosmetics and cleaning products. Cetogenix: developing a new waste conversion technology that unlocks the hidden potential of organic wastes, by adapting a process known as hydrothermal oxidation to deconstruct materials into useful components. The technology has the potential to integrate with wastewater treatment systems, minimising emissions. Flux Aviation: developing ultra safe batteries to enable electric flight, through an early warning system that can reliably detect an impending thermal runaway event. HyWaves: installing a novel technology 50kW solar array and providing a solar to hydrogen test facility, with HyWaves optimised power management and control architecture connecting electrolysers to renewable power sources. This project will link into Cranfield’s wider hydrogen research activities. Radiant Matter: developing plant-derived and biodegradable sparkling-effect materials to meet requirements in a variety of markets.
