#tiptuesday Since the announcement of #disney Fall Engineering Internships posting 1/22/24, I got a lot of questions how to “stand out” during the application. Here’s some basic tips to help prepare you. ✅ Apply once you see them! Dont tell yourself, “I’ll do it later”. That job posting may be close when you get around to it. ✅ Focus your application efforts. Read the Job Description to ensure you meet the eligibility/qualifications for the role. Pro Tip - just because “Internship” is in the title doesn’t mean you qualify for it. ✅ Proof read your resume before submitting an application. Any typos or incorrect dates should be updated. ✅ Be confident! This is your moment to shine, so don’t second guess yourself. I’ve seen hundreds upon hundreds of posts this week of great companies celebrating the great work their interns did this summer. The job skills, but more importantly the culture and industry connection and experiences they encounter shape them and help to refocus their educational and eventual career plans as they go back to school this Fall. Part of me cannot help but wonder why we seem to extend these opportunities to primarily only college students. If the skilled trades could harness that same number of potential future employees in some sort of internship, job shadow, or co-op for the summer, utilizing young men and women who otherwise would have no exposure to our mechanical/electrical/construction, what a difference it could make in so many lives and could completely flip the script on the biased beliefs that “no one wants to work anymore”. The average high school graduate can list on two hands the number of professions available, not for a lack of intellect, but our failure to get in front of them in any significant numbers to educate them on the many opportunities out there. I understand this would be a monumental lift, but I know so many people that would reach out a hand and help carry this load, that we could get it done. Personal connections, especially with people established in their careers, can go a long way to landing professional jobs—this can be a barrier for first-generation and/or low-income students after graduation. That’s why we partner with CareerSpring, a nonprofit that assists first-generation and/or low-income students and graduates with finding and securing internships and jobs, connecting with volunteer advisors for career guidance and networking, and accessing career resources.
