🔷 I opened my animal hospital in 2015 and within 5 months I was American Animal Hospital Association accredited. I have been a proud advocate of the accreditation process and our good standing with this independent organization that holds its accredited members to the highest standard of veterinary care. 🔶 So imagine my shock and disgust when I received an email from the President and CEO of AAHA yesterday informing me of an update to one of my “free” member “benefits" - Benchmarking+. 🔷 Allow me to explain. 🔶 Two years ago, AAHA partnered with Petabyte Technology to create a software system that would allow AAHA-accredited animal hospitals to perform advanced benchmarking analysis. AAHA spent approximately $500,000 of MEMBER MONEY (that’s me) to pay Petabyte to develop this system that collected data from AAHA member’s practice software. 🔷 ONE month after AAHA engaged Petabyte, Chewy bought Petabyte. AAHA members questioned this relationship and when interviewed in June 2023, the CEO of AAHA stated, “you can work with Chewy and understand their intent and figure out if there's a way to turn the relationship into something that makes this better … even though there might be skeptics." 🔶 His approach did not age well as Chewy Health announced in December 2023 that they were opening Chewy Animal Hospitals in 2024. 🔷 AAHA missed the mark on Chewy’s INTENT and an email “update” quietly announcing that the AAHA board voted unanimously to end the AAHA/Chewy relationship effective immediately is a woefully inadequate resolution. 🔶 AAHA has an obligation to its members. HANDING OVER our MONEY to CHEWY while also allowing them to access member data and use it to compete with us is outrageous - and an example of how the veterinary industry is hurling itself toward a corporate world that maximizes "shareholder profit." 🔷 AAHA would not pass its own audit to be AAHA-accredited with this approach to its “best practices.” #veterinarymedicine #chewy #data
