Your software’s cost matters 0%, unless your performance is 100%. The ROI will be there if you have an A+ app to offer. I was at IBM during the $2B acquisition of cloud company Turbonomic. We worked hard on a pitch for the tool. We were ready to tell customers: “Look, this will reduce your costs!” The pitch was totally wrong. Why? Benjamin Nye, who was Turbonomic’s CEO, came in and kindly rejected this idea. He told us, frankly, it’s silly. Because cost doesn’t matter if your performance isn’t top-notch. The app IS the business. (In fact, you could say we were under-selling Turbonomic by focusing on cost, instead of its power.) If you have a great product, the cost savings will be there. The ROI will be there. Otherwise, if your app doesn’t perform, your customer will just pull the plug, right? Money saved $$. Performance > cost. Always.
