Capture harmful emissions at source, whether it is at a power plant, petrochemical refinery, other industrial facility, or even at the exhaust of an automobile, before they enter the atmosphere when it becomes very difficult to trap them. 2. Capture emissions we have already been putting out with impunity, out of ignorance for the first 100 years or so after the Industrial Revolution began, and knowing better since, when 1 above was always possible. We will indeed be nursing the delusion of continuing to use fossil fuels if we behave as we did in the last 50 at which time, by 2070, after having politically accommodated the economic development aspirations of the Global South of about 6.5 billion people or more, we will have eventually run out of oil, though not natural gas and coal. The fear among environmental advocates is that carbon capture is a facade for continued impunity, because we do not have another 50 years on both rising fossil fuel scarcity and on climate change which produced both wars and climate change in the last 50 years. If we address this fear by policy in collaboration with the fossil fuel industry and other economic sectors with technology to scrub emissions at source we will have cut down to zero all future emissions from human activity by 2030. It is not the fossil fuel sitting in the ground that pollutes and causes climate change but the technology we use to convert it to useful energy that does. Still, we must aggressively begin preparing now to find economically viable and scalable alternatives to the cheap fossil fuels, starting with clean and safe fission nuclear power to use uranium and other radioactive elements in sequence of resource stock and their depletion rate or flow. By then we will have bought ourselves enough time to build a hydrogen economy for the planet or perhaps even a nuclear fusion energy source, with the economy, however, still subject to the Jevons Paradox on finite natural resources which is why we need as circular an economy as possible to maximize conservation of the remaining natural resource stock. — TAMIRISA, One World, https://www.tamirisa.com.

“So which side are you on, #Investor, #Startup or something else?” That was a new question posed repeatedly to me this week, and a fast way to get to the key point: Could you have money for me? It was great to get out of the office and hear investors at all scales from Angel to Corporate talking about their investing criteria, and also to startups (including fellow #Hydrogen boss Leon Rizzi, co-founder Jolt - Activated Electrodes for Electrolysis) about how the big, hard, deep-tech problems need support of institutional investors to help make material change to the world’s supply chains. This, by the way, was at two events held by Climate First. One key takeaway is that the UK startup scene now offers great value for money to US investors, and that transatlantic investing at all scales is an emerging trend we should expect to see over the next year.  Another, of course, was politics – with elections across Europe, in a few weeks in the UK and in a few months in the USA, many are battening down the hatches to see what the next major shifts are in government strategy, subsidies, and energy. IRA is already opening doors for UK companies to grow westward, but that all vanishes if there’s a change at 1600. This is perhaps one upside of the deep-tech problem – it’s slow, so patience is needed, but arguably, built-in to investor expectations – but 4 or 5 years (or double that if a non-green regime is returned a second time) might be tough to bear if off-takers are also discouraged and net zero promises are dismantled by people who apparently don’t understand we only have one planet to live on. Science and tech can only go so far. If the human behaviour doesn't change positively, the surface to stand on will remain shaky. Yet, there is hope in Khosla's ventures (or adventures). His investments that bring hope for a rapid energy transition include, replacing coal based furnaces with cleaner laser furnaces, a prototype commonwealth fusion reactor that can provide vast amount of clean energy but has eluded top nuclear physicists for long, or a cleaner, or a more efficient solid state battery... among several other ideas. Europe currently boasts considerable research into fusion energy, positioning it as a frontrunner in the field. However, one pressing concern is the competition for talent and resources, particularly in the United States. While Europe may lead in research, the US often enjoys greater financial resources and investment opportunities, thanks to its robust private sector and government funding. This again raises the question of retaining startups within Europe's borders and how it poses a challenge. European tech funding to halve to US$45bn but AI and ClimateTech pull ahead According to data from venture capital firm Atomico, total capital invested into European tech start-ups is projected to fall to US$45bn this year as investors continued to reel from the effects of high interest rates. That is down from US$82bn in 2022, which is itself down from US$100bn in 2021. However, Atomico said whereas the US has declined by -8% and China slipped by -9% for overall venture funding since 2020, Europe has seen investment levels grow by +19% in the same time period, in a sign of resilience for the region. AI was the biggest pull for fundraising rounds, with eleven AI companies securing ‘megarounds’ of US$100m or more. ClimateTech was another standout sector, according to Atomico. Funding into companies in the carbon and energy space accounted for 27% of all capital invested in European tech in 2023 - three times more than in 2021. SEP's recent analysis of 388 early-stage hydrogen companies in the US led to three initial conclusions. 1. The excitement around innovative, new technologies focused on the production and use of low-carbon hydrogen is warranted. 2. There is a significant gap when it comes to startups disrupting an equally important piece of the puzzle... the moving and storing of that low-carbon hydrogen. 3. Dilutive plus non-dilutive capital inflows to the companies broke over $1B annually starting in 2020 and has increased significantly since then.
