Let's talk about M&A activity 💵 in Climate Tech 🌍 and how that will impact the climate venture capital industry. Did you know that according to the Silicon Valley Bank (Dan Baldi, Jordan Kanis, Eli Oftedal, Josh Pherigo, Timot Lamarre, Bo Ren, Charlie Walker, Mark Gallagher) The Future of Climate Tech report 2024, there is a decline 📉 in M&A activity of 35% YoY in climate tech? In addition, 1 out of 3 climate tech companies is going to be out of cash in the next 6 months, this is in comparison of 1 out of 5 in the general tech startup ecosystem 🚀 . We see a lot of new climate funds emerging by new fund managers and recently we see a lot of climate tech funds closing larger and larger funds. For example Clean Energy Ventures (Daniel Goldman, David Miller, Temple Fennell, Ted Dillon) just closed a $305 million fund II and opened a new London office (Shanbor Gupta). This is after deploying their $110 million fund I in climate tech companies. This is extremely exciting and a great signal for growth in venture funding for climate tech solution. However, the future of the climate tech venture capital industry depends on exits, M&A and IPOs 🛑 With an average time 🕓 to return money to their LPs of 7-10 years (I see funds that are more patient but that's the industry benchmark), we need more M&A activity. We must create incentives for corporations to acquire climate tech startups and not only invest, and we see a decline in that sector as for now. If we don't see a change in that trend we might experience many challenges for the climate tech ventures industry in the next 10 years (by 2034/5 - critical years!). We need to create market and policy incentives that will allow to create momentum for the VC industry and that will accelerate the adoption of climate innovation by corporations. Having spent most of my career at startups and now working on upstream carbon projects, I've found the parallels in investor thinking between the two fascinating. Just as venture capitalists seek out startups with the potential for success in five years based on a pitch deck,  investors in upstream carbon projects seek out projects that will produce high-quality credits in the next five years based on a draft Project Design Document (PDD). Here's how I see some of the intersection of these two worlds: High Risk, High Reward: Both startup investments and upstream carbon projects come with inherent risks due to their stage of development. While a vision likely exists for both, its success hasn't been proven yet. Startups need to demonstrate market traction and scalability, while carbon projects need to fulfil their ex-ante credit predictions and undergo verification. However, with risk comes the potential for significant upside, whether through a successful exit event for startups or securing a pipeline of credits at advantageous prices for carbon projects. Long-Term Vision: Successful venture capital investments require patience and a long-term vision as startups navigate various growth stages. Similarly, upstream carbon projects demand sustained commitment and investment over time, often spanning upwards of 40 years, with forward contracts typically lasting at least 5 years. Both endeavours require investors willing to prioritize long-term impact over immediate returns. Ecosystem Support: Securing investment for startups isn't just about the money; it's about accessing the right ecosystem of mentors, advisors, and strategic partners. Similarly, for carbon projects, early-stage investors can act as proponents, providing expertise and filling gaps in project development. Investing in carbon projects at an early stage may seem daunting, but by recognising the similarities between upstream carbon projects and other industries, we can leverage lessons learned to inform strategies in this domain. 💡🌍 #carbonprojects #carbonmarkets #carboncredits #upstream #sustainability
