The future of science-backed wellness is taking shape. Skeptical of overstated claims, consumers want clinically proven products. Combining cutting-edge research and storytelling, Seed Health is rewriting the supplement playbook — and building a $1B microbiome health business. 🦠 Origins Seed started as a biosciences company in 2015. Its Chief Scientist chaired the WHO panel that first defined “probiotic,” while co-founder Ara Katz had a background in film. In 2018, the company launched its CPG arm to share microbiome science with the masses. 💊 Approach So far, the company only sells three products: A daily synbiotic (for kids and adults), and a vaginal health probiotic. Supporting gut, skin, cardiovascular health, and more, all claims are backed by clinical trials. Making people care, it translates jargon into compelling narratives — explaining there’s “an invisible world within us” and “understanding the microbiome is like seeing the matrix.” Or as Katz puts it, Seed “writes Nature papers and Instagram posts.” 🧪 R&D A powerful flywheel, Seed’s CPG profits fund biotech research, which feeds product development. In April, it launched a computational biology platform to explore the microbiome’s impact on brain function, metabolic health, longevity, and menopause. Pending breakthroughs, it could be the first to offer proven supplements for each. Meanwhile, the company’s environmental research arm works on projects like probiotics for coral reefs and microbes for upcycling plastic. Beyond “better for” people and planet, Seed is good for both. 💼 Business Model The brand is almost entirely DTC, but struck a multi-year partnership with Erewhon in 2022. Leveraging the niche grocer as a discovery platform, it offers discounted subscriptions with in-store purchases and pays Erewhon an affiliate fee. Since probiotics have to be taken consistently and in perpetuity, its online store is subscription only — requiring consumers make it a routine. More than a cash grab, even the subscription model is explained through science. 🔮 Future Already profitable, the company expects ~$200M in revenue this year, up from ~$140M in ‘23. Plotting expansion, it has microbiome-friendly home and personal care products in the pipeline — designed to reverse chronic allergic and autoimmune conditions caused by toxins. In a supplement category full of false marketing, Seed wants to prove science and wellness can coexist. 📩 Subscribe to the Fitt Insider newsletter for more health & wellness headlines, trends, and insights. → https://lnkd.in/ePW8y89d
