18th July, Mandela Day, people should be encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes to community service, honoring Nelson Mandela's 67 years of public service. Some specific ways individuals can give back to their communities: 1. Help at Local Shelters: Spend time assisting at homeless shelters or food banks. This could involve preparing and serving meals, organizing donations, or simply providing company to those in need. 2. Community Clean-Up Drives: Organize or join efforts to clean parks, streets, lakes or beaches. On National Build Day, Alabama Professional Services and Sleep in Heavenly Peace joined forces to tackle a daunting issue: child bedlessness. This initiative aimed to provide hand-made beds to children who, without this support, would have to sleep on floors or couches, contributing to severe health and emotional challenges. Reflecting on my own experiences, I remember volunteering for community projects similar to this where we came together, rolled up our sleeves, and made a tangible impact. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about working collectively to uplift those in need—it's a reminder of the positive change we can create in our communities. Trauma-Informed Care is a lens in which we interact with our communities to best support their healing and needs. Tenants of trauma-informed care include safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. Applying these tenants to the fundraising space helps empower fundraisers to build a stronger communications and language that works to include donors in the work of justice and healing. Learning objectives will include how to craft narratives that center lived experience without othering or trivializing lived experience, how to practically apply trauma-informed principles to our work, and how to engage donors in the process of trauma-informed systems that lead to healthier philanthropic interactions and stronger community ties.
