Reliance and Disney have joined hands to create a $8.5 billion media company. What’s this deal exactly? 👇
Reliance Industries has announced to merge its media arm ‘Viacom18’ into Disney owned ‘Star India’, as part of a joint venture.
This would bring all of Star India and Network18’s media assets under one hood:
Colors, MTV India, Hotstar, JioCinema, Star Plus, Asianet are just a few to name.
This venture would form an $8.5 billion media enterprise under Reliance’s direct control with..
-Reliance Industries owning 16.34%
-Viacom18(Reliance group company) having 46.82%
-And Disney partnering with 36.84%
This venture would be headed by Reliance Foundation’s chairperson Mrs. Nita Ambani.
To further pump the growth plans, Reliance has committed to invest $1.4 billion in this venture.
That’s not all, this entity would have access to Disney’s library of 30,000+ content assets, and an exclusive right to distribute Disney films in India.
Once fructified, this joint venture will have a reach to 75 cr viewers, which can be a huge asset to negotiate & sell ad-slots to advertisers.
While this deal would give Disney further inroads to the Indian market, Reliance would get to penetrate further in the growing media & entertainment industry.
This deal comes after the fallout of Zee-Sony merger, which was expected to be a game changer in the Indian media industry.
But with that deal not happening anymore, and Reliance partnering with the media mogul Disney, what do you think lies ahead?
We’d love to hear your thoughts.
