NH, VT, ME, MA & RI are ALL in the top 10; that's pretty impressive! 10 best, worst states for healthcare in 2024 Erica Carbajal - 2 hours ago Minnesota is the best state for healthcare when it comes to affordability and quality and Mississippi is the worst, according to WalletHub's 2024 ranking published July 29.  For the annual ranking, the financial services company compared all 50 states across 44 measures related to cost, access and outcomes. Metrics included the cost of a medical visit, average community hospital expenses per inpatient day, life expectancy and hospital beds per capita. Last Thursday, WellSky hosted our first Florida Care Coordination Summit in Aventura. While I wasn't ready for the heat and humidity☀, I was pumped to hear from executives transforming healthcare in Florida. Here are a few key takeaways: 1. Hospitals continue caring for higher acuity patients - not exactly new news, but important for understanding and improving total cost of care. Begs the question: if patients are sicker now more than ever, how do we work together to keep them out of the hospital (if possible)? 2. Increasing patient engagement in the PCP/ambulatory venue is a major focus to drive down resource consumption. Targeting those patients who are high ED and inpatient consumers with cost utilization analytics is where to start, and encouraging patients to meet with their PCPs multiple times per year is where the rubber meets the road. With more visits happening in the ambulatory venue, PCPs ultimately become the conduit between specialists, PACs, ED visits and hospital stays. PCPs must be empowered to deliver this level of care, though! 3. As value-based care organizations enter new markets and serve new patients, hiring more bodies ISN'T scalable and it's time consuming. Using technology to solves your problems and improve care coordination IS scalable. 4. Building your network keeps coming up in these discussions. Acute facilities + PCP organizations + post-acute providers should all be working together; after all, you're caring for the same patient. Start reaching out and building those relationships now; your patients will be glad you did.

The new dimensions of quality of care go beyond traditional clinical outcomes to include several interconnected aspects: ### 1. **Patient-Centeredness** - This dimension emphasizes care that respects and responds to individual patient preferences, needs, and values. Ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions is pivotal. It involves good communication, emotional support, and involving families and friends as appropriate. ### 2. **Effectiveness** - Care should be based on scientific knowledge and evidence-based guidelines to all who could benefit and refrained from those not likely to benefit. This includes implementing practices that have been shown through research and clinical trials to be effective in improving health outcomes. ### 3. **Efficiency** - Efficiency involves reducing waste, including waste of equipment, supplies, ideas, and energy, and providing care in a cost-effective manner without compromising quality. It focuses on maximizing resource use and avoiding care that does not contribute to improved patient outcomes. ### 4. **Equity** - Providing care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socioeconomic status is crucial. Equity ensures that every patient has access to the same quality of care. ### 5. **Timeliness** - Minimizing waits and sometimes harmful delays for both those who receive and those who give care. Timeliness targets reducing waiting times and potentially harmful delays for both receiving and giving care. ### 6. **Safety** - Patients expect to be safe from harm when undergoing treatment. This dimension focuses on minimizing harm to patients from the care that is intended to help them. It includes reducing medical errors, enhancing medication safety, and improving surgical outcomes. ### 7. **Accessibility** - Care should be accessible to all, regardless of geographic, financial, cultural, or linguistic barriers. This involves ensuring that health services and information are accessible to all people, particularly the most vulnerable or marginalized groups. ### 8. **Sustainability** - The sustainability of healthcare practices—ensuring health systems can provide high levels of care without exhausting the natural, economic, and human resources—is increasingly recognized as a critical dimension of quality. ### 9. **Transparency and Accountability** - Systems should be transparent in their operations and accountable to stakeholders, including patients, with mechanisms in place for feedback and improvements. Transparency in results, costs, and processes is key to accountability and trust.

The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Commission (IMLC) has worked to transform aspects of healthcare access, telemedicine, patient care, and for those working as and with locum tenens — all towards the cause of improved patient experiences and outcomes.
