Shared across two-days, 600+ Michigan students learned about careers in heavy equipment technology through Ferris State University’s “Diesel Days” event, hosted at its Big Rapids campus’ Heavy Equipment Center on Wednesday, October 11th and Thursday, October 12th. Presented by the university’s College of Engineering Technology, the event offered high school, vocational school and community college students a closer look at educational options and career paths in the rapidly growing heavy equipment field. School districts with students in attendance included Tuscola, Bar Arenac, Canton, Network NW, Alma, Eaton, Ionia, Ottawa Career Tech Center, Mecosta, Montcalm, Newaygo, Kent, and Lapeer to name a few. We were grateful to attend a second year in a row and look forward to next year!

Glad to see trade schools making a comeback! With the rising demand for skilled workers in fields like construction, diesel tech, and computer technology, it's no surprise that enrollment in trade schools has been on the rise. According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupations requiring vocational training are projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations. It’s great to see our leaders recognizing the importance of hands-on training and specialized skills in meeting the demands of the workforce. What other factors do you think are contributing to this renewed interest in trade education?
Lt. Governor Jon Husted was at the Southern Hills Career & Technical Center's groundbreaking ceremony yesterday! The expansion project was made possible by a $4.6 million Career Technical Construction Program grant, helping the school expand their facility to add two new programs – Welding Fabrication and Allied Health Care – to serve up to 100 additional students.

We love seeing investment in the next generation of leaders! Check out the post from Economic Development Manager Bruce Coleman below to learn about how Sherwood High School is preparing students for success through the Career & Technical Education (CTE) program.
SHERWOOD HIGH SCHOOL CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW I was excited to be invited to attend the recent CTE Industry Partnership meeting which Adam Mitchell, Principal of Sherwood High School, and Liz Barrett, the SHS Career Center Director, put together on April 24, 2024 at Sherwood High School. Over the last few years, Liz and Adam have been working closely with the teachers at SHS and the industry partners to grow this program which is intended to provide alternative career opportunities for Sherwood students. The program recognizes the essential need to grow the next generation of our workforce and opportunities our students to grow into the middle class. Industry partners invited to participate at the meeting included Intel Corporation (semiconductors), Lam Research (semiconductors), NSI Manufacturing/Nuance Systems (semiconductors/cleantech), Rosendin Electric (construction), GK Machining, Albina (metals and machining), Portland General Electric, Perlo Construction, Sherwood Broadband, Cooper Mountain Aleworks (hospitality), Washington County Visitors Association (hospitality), Hampton Inn by Hilton-Sherwood (hospitality), Fortis Construction, Inc., Agranoff (entrepreneurship), Harris Thermal Transfer Products (industrial fabricators), Delap CPA’s, Maria Ponzi (Oregon Wine Country), Metropolitan Land Group, George Fox University and others. There was an extensive discussion about opportunities for job shadowing and how to focus on the skill needs of industry. From an economic development perspective, I am so excited about the work that the SHS Career Center is doing to introduce students to various alternative careers which will help grow the prosperity of our city and region. Thanks for the leadership!!

Looking to see these electric vehicles in action? Attend EnergyWhiz at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC®) on Saturday April 20, 2024. https://lnkd.in/g4s3pbba How fast are they? According to Electrathon America, due to the high drag induced by small courses with tight corners, these cars may only average 15mph to 20mph. While on large speedways with wide sweeping corners, well-designed cars can average low highway speeds. The highest average speed (for 60 minutes) attained by a qualifying Electrathon America vehicle was recorded on a very efficient 3-mile tri-oval, at 62.1mph. Students in Central and East Florida are jump-starting their STEM careers with our continued support of Electrathon America. We surprised students with EV kits to design, build, and race electric go-karts against peers in the spring. The program fosters creativity and innovation – one EV at a time – as we continue integrating schools into this growing community of EV visionaries!💡🏎️ Learn more about this electrifying initiative: http://spr.ly/6047Vp5GN 🌐💻
