I had a great conversation with Miska Noponen from Annie Advisor about the mental health challenges students face today. It was good to learn that schools are taking this topic seriously. After all, our kids are our future. Mental health support needs to be provided at an early age, so we can reduce the issues that we are seeing with aged out students aka employees today. Mercer studies tell us that 81% of employees are burned out and even other studies point out that managers are worse off than employees. We need to start providing support at an early age to avoid dropouts and later on avoid absenteeism. Meanwhile, start with EAP, but go further!

Mental Health Matters Pennsylvania House Bill 1519 (providing excused mental health days for students), proposed by Representative Napolean Nelson will be voted on in June 2024. Some members of the House believe that mental health is not an issue and/or schools are already addressing mental health with federal/state funding. Ask your Representative/school district/school board: How is funding used for resources and services to address mental health and social-emotional learning for all students and staff? If the response is counselors, social workers, contract with outside agencies and/or "we have a social-emotional curriculum"... Then the school district is NOT using funds appropriately.
Please join me Saturday June 8th to start the important conversation of how mental health is affecting our youth. School is coming to a close and an idle mind can be the devils playground in these summer months. We aim to equipt the parents and guardians with tools and resources to start these often difficult conversations. So mark your calandar and please invite a friend or two to join me in this important conversation!

Did you know 75% of all mental health conditions begin by age 24? That’s why the college years are so critical for understanding and talking about mental health, and why NAMI partnered with the Jed Foundation to develop the Mental Health College Guide. Going to college is a big step, and big steps come with excitement, the unknown, and, usually, a healthy amount of stress. That’s not only ok, but it’s to be expected. And it’s the reason this guide was designed by—and for—college students. The guide covers topics from self-care to getting mental health care support, to legal rights and self-advocacy.
