Shout out to our team at Professional Builders Supply for coordinating a day of fun and giving benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs Serving Wake County. The team made a generous $10,000 donation to the BGC and gave a few of its young members a facility tour. One of the club members summed up his experience by saying it was “the best day of his life” and proudly declared that he would “never take off his PBS hardhat,” so it is safe to say it was a successful day. https://lnkd.in/eayyjUQa

Are we helping or hurting? That is a question many residents of San Francisco ask ourselves in the midst of a stark and increasing equity gap. As a parent, community member, and incoming board member of the Horizons at San Francisco Friends School, I’m keenly aware of the potential learning loss our public school students in the Mission District experience in the summer months without our support. Our city is undergoing another crisis - looming budget cuts threaten vital programs like Horizons at SFFS that provide equitable learning for Mission youth. We urgently need your support to secure bridge funding and ensure our summer enrichment continues. Our scholars and families are relying on Horizons' high-quality academics and social-emotional growth. Horizons has been successfully leveraging the months when students are out of school to stem summer learning loss for children in San Francisco for ~10 years. The program has also intentionally increased impact by supporting their scholars through their educational journey during the school year and into High School. Last year, Horizons impacted 150+ scholars with targeted small classroom instruction, confidence-building, and joyful community enrichment experiences- thanks to our dedicated summer education workforce. But we can't continue without you. Please join me in supporting Horizons at SFFS today to expand partnerships, engage more crisis-impacted families, and grow our supportive community stronger. In past years, the SF Department of Children, Youth and Families has been a partner to increase access to education for our students. This summer, as we face a potential 40% loss to our summer program due to DCYF funding cuts that have impacted so many vital programs in our city, we’ve decided to celebrate Horizons Giving Day, the whole month of May. Please join me in our movement - your gift saves the summer for San Francisco scholars and helps bridge the educational equity gap in our city. Let’s help together. Glass half empty post, but hear me out, because I/we/schools need you... So many needs are going unmet, and it pains me every day. In my role, I need people power and a semi-truckload of funding power every day, but today I/my team needs it STAT to further our reach. Activate Good received THIRTY applications for The eLOVEate Schools Project (nearly double the number we received last year!). It pained me to close the application when today's deadline came. Many moons ago I was a teacher in the lowest performing district of SC, and I KNOW the vastness of the needs of public schools and still aim to be a champion for them. As I review these applications, I am blown away by the sheer volume of needs that is detailed within them. Due to this being the last year of our funding for this project and our small but mighty capacity, we can only select SIX schools for the next cohort. This also really pains me. Currently this program brings volunteer support and community resources to under-resourced schools in Wake County, and countless impacts have been made over our two years of this heart driven work. Other counties have reached out to inquire about expanding this program. We DREAM of broadening our reach and are filled with ideas, but we would LOVE to talk through them with the people who can really care and can HELP us expand our efforts. We need more staff on our team, we need more sponsors for transformative projects, and we need it all right now to help meet the needs in our schools and beyond. If you're passionate about education, we need you to volunteer. If your company, church, university, or group can financially support transformative projects, we need your support. If you're still reading my soapbox rant, know that I appreciate you more than you know. As you ponder how to help our scappy team with its efforts, let these quotes from the applications sink in: "Everything is old and feels trashed." 💔 "We need to have a building that screams a welcoming, positive, and clean environment for both staff, students and families." "We want our students to SEE themselves in our building and feel like this is a place they want to be (attendance is hovering around 51% missing 6 or more days a year). School should be a place of JOY, and we need help getting there!" EVERY school community should have this and SO MUCH MORE.

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day for radical generosity! Every $20 donation helps to provide life-changing information to one more young adult. Megan’s Foundation is a very young tax-exempt 501c(3) non-profit & catalyst for real change & are laser focused on this one thing. Those closest to this issue (Title IX, Counselors, Student Wellness staff) know how desperately this is needed. Having distributed more than $107,000 to colleges and non-profits for programs to prevent relationship violence BEFORE it starts. A few results: at one school, 93% of participants said they now can recognize an unhealthy relationship & would stop it before it escalates. At another school, 87% of young men said they would intervene in a disrespectful situation to prevent it from escalating. Our website has more results: Megansfoundation.org. YOUR gift can empower young adults to hold each other accountable & stop it before it starts!

🎉 Big News from the Student Basic Needs Coalition! 🎉 We’re excited to share that SBNC has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. This grant will enable us to expand our peer navigator program to more community colleges, helping thousands of students gain access to SNAP benefits and tackle food insecurity. Community colleges are a vital gateway to education for students from low-income backgrounds, yet many eligible students still face barriers to receiving SNAP benefits. The SNAP gap—where students miss out on benefits they’re entitled to—can have serious consequences, from increased stress to lower academic performance. Thanks to this generous grant, we’re expanding our peer navigator program, where student leaders with lived experience guide their peers through the SNAP application process. These peer navigators play a critical role in reducing stigma and making the process more accessible. We’re also creating a new full-time Campus Program Manager role to oversee these efforts and ensure more students get the support they need. This initiative is about more than just increasing SNAP enrollment—it’s about creating a sustainable model that can be replicated across other schools, amplifying our impact. We’re incredibly grateful to the Annie E. Casey Foundation for their commitment to this crucial work. Stay connected with us as we continue to push forward in our mission to make college more affordable and accessible for all students. Our mission to make school fun for over 160 children across four schools is falling short, and frankly, it's disheartening. Despite our tireless efforts, our fundraising struggles persist. After 3 months, we've scraped together €570 (420 online, 150 offline), but we're a long way off from our €2000 target, a figure we need to support our local communities for the whole of 2024. The reality is stark. Without adequate resources, these children face a deprived educational experience. The absence of sports equipment, unsafe play spaces, and limited access to games hinder their growth and joy in learning. This is precisely where every raised cent will make a profound impact. This isn't about charity, it's about their only opportunity. If these children were in your community, not mine, wouldn't you strive to provide them with better chances for a brighter future? We're not asking for a handout; we're asking for partnership in changing lives. Your contribution—whether small or large—will directly impact these young minds, giving them a chance at a more fulfilling education. For those who've supported us, thank you immensely. For others, we urge you to reconsider. Your assistance is vital, and time is of the essence. Share this plea if you can't contribute; spread the word and be a catalyst for change. Contact me directly to learn more about how your support can make a tangible difference. https://gofund.me/27365e8c

In a time of manifestos, here are some practical proposals that would really help young people experiencing multiple disadvantages to access higher education and skills…
Our advocacy work happens quietly, always with young people at its heart. We have worked collaboratively with our forward-thinking members from across the UK to develop these NNECL asks of the next UK Government. Along with keeping young people central to aiming higher, we consider our recommendations vital for transforming the educational outcomes for young people in care. As a membership body, we have nearly 200 active members, including our Student Voices Network, universities, colleges, foster agencies, local authority leaving care teams, virtual schools and charities. Over 400 individual practitioners are supported via these organisations enabling us to reach a community of more than 800 dynamic and kind professionals. We proudly work together towards our vision, for learners with care experience across our four nations to be empowered and supported to achieve their full educational potential.
