It was wonderful to talk with Joshua Breland at Anedot about major gifts. A few takeaways from our conversation: - The term "major gifts" is arbitrary. We focused on our conversation on meaningful gifts that move organizations forward and how to go about determining what that level should be. - A zero based budgeting approach helps organizations to set fundraising goals and metrics. - It's important to share with donors the impact of gifts at different levels. Sharing that $5,000 accomplishes X while $50,000 accomplishes Y, helps to create a giving structure that donors can understand. - As with all fundraising, major gifts are all about relationships, trust, and communication. #fundraisingstrategy #nonprofitfundraising #majorgifts

Setting up investments under trust or investments that can attract Business Relief (BR) and gifting, are three possible considerations when providing advice to clients on how to properly plan their estate to protect assets and mitigate inheritance tax (IHT). Although a client who lacks mental capacity cannot settle a trust, their attorneys or deputy can, on behalf of the client, make larger investments attracting BR and/or gifts (including to themselves) but only if it can be unequivocally demonstrated that in doing so so, the client’s (donor’s or P’s) own lifelong financial position is not jeopardised and their later life needs are fully met. For larger gifts that are not permitted under s.12 of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, a Court order will be required and, in the case of BR investments, is recommended, before implementation. This article by Mary Rimmer TEP of Brachers LLP clearly explains gifting on behalf of a client who may have lost mental capacity.
