Today is #WorldLupusDay, and I'd like to take a moment to share a few thoughts. Firstly, living with an “invisible disability” can be challenging, but I'm grateful for the wisdom it has brought me. Before my diagnosis, I dismissed my symptoms for a long time because I “looked healthy.” I assumed everyone experienced full-body pain, exhaustion, dizziness, and difficulty breathing, thinking I was just worse at coping. My journey to diagnosis taught me the importance of not judging things at “face value.” There might be more below the surface that could have great impact once recognized. Imagine the differences we could make if we more-often chose to take a step back and consider what we could be overlooking. Secondly, I recently came across a 2023 study worth noting. It found that companies incorporating disability-inclusive practices experienced 1.6 times more revenue, 2.6 times more net income, and 2 times more economic profit. Underscoring this, Glassdoor reported that companies participating in the disability equality index received 5 times as many positive mentions of diversity and inclusion in reviews, resulting in higher employee satisfaction and retention scores. Essentially, prioritizing people over profit leads to greater profitability. While I'm fortunate to have always worked for supportive and considerate companies, I recognize that others haven't been as lucky. There's still much work needed in society to ensure equitable pathways to success. It's refreshing and encouraging to see data pointing to mutual benefit, and I hope it drives greater disability inclusion across all industries.
