Thus, the intimidation against those who consider themselves to be persons with hearing loss continues—even after years of democracy in our country! Article 1 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as well as Pillar 1 of the SA White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are clear regarding the reality of loss, limitation, or impairment and the concept of disability, including sensory impairment and hearing loss. I am ashamed of what I still often see and hear after 40 years as a person with hearing loss! Negative perceptions about persons with impairments are to the detriment of the process of reasonable accommodation on various levels of society. Pacifiers are an excellent source of soothing, but eventually it’s important to limit their use to the sleep space in order to promote language development and self-regulation skills. This can also be a first step toward weaning the pacifier entirely and finding new ways to help infants soothe themselves. Recommend to families that they: 1. After 5 months of age, keep the pacifier in the sleep space (crib) during the day so that the baby does not have access. 2. Resist using the pacifier when children are awake, and instead help them to tolerate hard moments without sucking. 3.
