An impactful and useful forum As everyone who lives in Singapore knows, there are hundreds of events every week. Not all are impactful and useful. The annual Regional Outlook Forum organized by ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS) took place yesterday. It was both impactful and useful. That is because ISEAS is the region's premier research institute on all things south east asian. The highlights for me were:- ✔ Mature, thoughtful and insightful presentations by Evan Feigenbaum and Xiang Lanxin on US-China relations. The tongue in cheek phrase used in connection with Europe (the Austro-Hungarian empire in particular) in the run up to 1914 comes to mind: "the situation is hopeless but not serious." Let us all hope the US stops thinking short term and starts thinking long term like China. Let us hope the US stops seeing everything in its relationship with China as a matter of national security. Let us hope China stops believing the West is in terminal decline and that wolf warrior behaviour wins friends and influences people. And, lastly, let us hope both great powers stop talking past each other and start talking to each other. Because it is serious that the world's great powers compete in peaceful coexistence so the rest of us can thrive. ✔ Great presentations on the nature of elites in Thailand and the response of young voters, the Marcos Presidency in The Philippines and Indonesia's upcoming elections. Many congratulations to Larry Shing Kwok Choi and the entire ISEAS team for helping increase our understanding of our region and the geopolitical forces which must be managed by it. #continuingeducation #asean #strategicthinking Singapore International Chamber of Commerce
