This week of Juneteenth, I encourage everyone to do three things: 1. Plan a trip to Montgomery, Alabama to visit the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace & Justice. In 2019, I visited with a group of lawyers, organizational leaders, and advocates working for racial justice to better understand the historic context of slavery, lynching, and anti-Black racism (including its pervasive, contemporary, and enduring systematic impacts). This year, staff from across my organization got to take this same trip. We all came back grounded in a history that many of us never learned in school. 2. This leads to my second suggestion, take some time to learn about the Alliance for Reparations, Reconciliation, and Truth (ARRT) (alliancefor.org), a new multiracial coalition taking action to address the harms of persistent denial of access to basic rights and resources. Here’s an example, the GI Bill was one significant way white Americans built generational wealth (https://n.pr/3RCQTWH) after WW II, when Black war veterans tried to buy homes or access education they were stonewalled (https://lnkd.in/g8unhJVi). Given this history, it’s not surprising that Black homeownership is at 44% while White homeownership is over 72%. My organization, Asian Law Caucus, is working with ARRT to address these systemic harms. 3. The third suggestion is for my Asian American immigrant colleagues and friends: talk about anti-Blackness with your community and understand the link between the civil rights movement and the ability of our families to enter post-1965. The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was passed months after the Voting Rights Act of 1965. “For our education to be truly human, for our schools to move beyond the hurt and ravage of history and the present, we need to collectively move toward the strategies and solutions the evidence makes clear that our Black and Brown children need and deserve.” - @selmekki History buffs, this one’s for you! Ever heard of the 1972 Gary Declaration? Well, it’s time to dust off the history books, because this message is more relevant than ever! 1972: 10,000 Black leaders gathered in Gary, Indiana, and said, “ENOUGH is ENOUGH!” They were tired of racism, poverty, and a system rigged against them. (Sound familiar?) The Gary Declaration was their mic drop moment. This powerful document demanded social, economic, and political equality for Black America. (Basically, a blueprint for a future where Black communities thrive.) Fast forward to today... and the fight for equality continues. (Spoiler alert: the Gary Declaration’s demands are still waiting to be answered.) The question is, why? Why haven’t we addressed the issues raised by these brilliant Black leaders over 50 years ago? Let’s be honest, folks. Ignoring the Gary Declaration is like ignoring Beyoncé at a karaoke bar – it ain’t gonna happen! Behold the Harsh Realities Faced by Black Women in the West. In various spheres—Hollywood, schools, communities, workplaces—Black women face a relentless burden, often compelled to surpass their non-Black counterparts. They endure unwarranted scrutiny and, at times, abuse. In my interactions with numerous Black women, the depth of their trauma due to systemic racism is staggering. Even young teenage Black girls carry this weight, highlighting the profound impact of discrimination. Furthermore, older Black women recount distressing experiences of being disregarded during childbirth by some medical professionals—a poignant illustration of systemic neglect. I pen this in solidarity with silenced Black voices, drowned out by colonial mentalities and institutionalized structures. I implore those with empathy to speak out and advocate for Black women navigating oppressive environments. This message isn't to be brushed aside but to encourage action—be a champion for social justice, standing with marginalized groups facing obstruction, abuse, and, tragically, murder. For those who will be in the Vineyard mid-August, please join this conversation hosted by the The African American Policy Forum about attacks on Black women In the Bullseye of Backlash: Anti-Wokeness and the Attack on Black Women Union Chapel, Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard Mon, Aug. 12 @ 5p ET In March earlier this year AAPF convened an urgent panel as part of our Her Dream Deferred series to bring together Black women from a variety of sectors to sound the alarm about Black women’s vulnerability to these attacks in the war on woke and discuss how we should see the long-term efforts to undermine Black women’s place in society as part of a larger assault on civil rights and democracy. Since that conversation the continued attack on Black women in universities, politics and businesses has continued unabated. The storm that has been created by the demonization of DEI, rollback of affirmative action, state-sanctioned violence and backlash against racial justice has found Black women at the center. This urgent panel will bring together eminent Black women scholars, activists and thinkers who will draw from the long tradition of Black women’s resistance to not only make sense of these intersectional attacks but outline the necessary steps to defend Black women and our communities. -------

Today, I join in commemorating Juneteenth, a significant day in American history. On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom, marking the end of slavery in the United States. This day, often called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a profound reminder of the long and ongoing struggle for justice and equality. As someone who benefits from the privileges of a society still grappling with the legacy of slavery and systemic racism, I believe it is crucial to use this day for reflection, education, and action. Reflect on the Past: Understand the historical context and the immense struggles faced by Black communities. The resilience and strength shown by those who endured slavery and fought for their freedom are truly remarkable. Educate Ourselves and Others: Juneteenth is an opportunity to learn about Black history and culture, as well as the systemic challenges that continue to affect Black Americans. Awareness and understanding are vital steps toward change. Commit to Change: This is also a day to reaffirm our commitment to promoting racial equality and justice. It’s about standing in solidarity with the Black community, advocating for policy changes, and supporting initiatives that drive equity and inclusion in our workplaces and beyond. By honoring Juneteenth, we acknowledge a painful chapter in our history and recognize the progress still needed. Black History Month is a time to recognize that our commitment to equity extends beyond a single month and beyond a single issue area. From voting rights to free expression to policing to reproductive justice, we fight the battle against systemic inequities every day. During this month dedicated to hearing Black voices, we hope that the stories told, the awareness gained, and the discussions ignited serve to fortify us all for the coming fights. Let us remain committed in our dedication to upholding the rights of all people. Now more than ever, we must stand up and demand equality; we must honor and celebrate our differences. We must be resolute in our ongoing commitment to creating a Commonwealth where equity becomes the norm. Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks a pivotal moment in American history – the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth not only honors the struggle and resilience of African Americans but also offers an opportunity to educate ourselves and support the ongoing fight for racial equality. AAEG (African American Employee Group) a BASF ECMS Employee Resource Group (ERG) shared with us a few ways we can support and learn more about this federal holiday. • Support Black-Owned Businesses – seek out local and online Black-owned businesses and make a conscious effort to support them year-round. This not only helps to uplift these businesses but also contributes to the economic empowerment of the Black community. • Advocate for Change – use your voice and platform to advocate for policies, initiatives, and education that promote racial equity. Whether it's through social media, community engagement, or other channels, your advocacy can help drive meaningful change. • Reflect and be part of the change – being part of the change involves continuous learning and a commitment to standing in solidarity with the Black community. • Amplify Black Voices - Listen to and amplify the voices of Black individuals and communities. Actively seek out perspectives and experiences that differ from your own. Engage in meaningful conversations about race and inequality. Remember that allyship is an ongoing journey that requires continuous learning, reflection, and action. • Donate – support organizations that advocate for racial justice and provide education by donating your time or resources. #togetherWeLead
