Working with a Sports 🏀 Chiropractor in High Level Sports As staffs in high level sport grow, there are increased opportunities for different types of practitioners to join and help serve the athletes. Typically, this model will have a physician (external) or an AT/PT/CSCS (internal) serve as the leaders. Adding a Chiropractor to the staff part-time may be the next steps to help with adjustments, manual therapy, rehab, etc. The question becomes, what is a sports chiropractor and how do we find a good one?? Many people do not know that Chiros can complete residencies and fellowships like PTs/Physicians can, just called different names. For example, in Sports Medicine: 1. CCSP (Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner) —Resident Level— 2. DABCSP (Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Sports Physicians) —Fellowship Level— In Rehab: 1. DACRB (Diplomate of the Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board) —Residency + Fellowship— To be clear, if you are looking for a Chiropractor to only perform adjustments, then post-graduate training likely isn’t as important. However, if the goal is: 1. add a practitioner that understands manual therapy, taping, emergency procedures, concussions, etc…then a sports medicine Chiro is the wave. 2. Add a practitioner to assist with the rehab and return to play process at all levels…then a rehab Chiro is the wave. 🔑 As we all know, credentials aren’t everything and this is only one slice of what makes a Sports Chiropractor competent, but hope this helps. Extremely humbling indirect mention made by an athlete at Sydney Uni AFL and the ongoing efforts to provide best practise around concussion management and player health/safety by Growthbuilt Sydney University Australian National Football Club medical. https://lnkd.in/gcPWwVyn We are beginning to hear the word 'concussion' being used more and more these days. Fortunately, as evidence continues to progress, so too does our understanding of its effects and more appropriate means of management. In light of this recent article, the AIS (Australian Institute Of Sport) has released recommendations to further improve concussion management and to minimise the risk of impending permanent changes by mandating: - Children aged 19 and UNDER to be symptom free for 14 days prior to returning to contact training - 21 day mandatory standdown from the time of concussion until returning to competitive contact sport - Professional athletes aged 19 and OVER with daily access to heath care professionals, to be symptom free for 10days. However, there is much ambiguity around what is considered right, and what is considered appropriate for community sport. The challenge that exists is proper education of medical personnel (i.e. recognition of concussion pathophysiology and signs/symptoms), means of return to play clearance by a so-called 'medical professional', and developing a systematic and uniform management protocol used throughout all sports. (i.e. timeframe to return-to-contact). Watch this space.

👏The recent decision by FC Barcelona manager Hansi Flick to order dental exams and tests for all players as part of their pre-season medical examination is truly commendable. However, the fact that this forward-thinking move raised a few eyebrows serves as a stark reminder that the critical connection between oral health and overall well-being, as well as athletic performance, is still largely underestimated. It is surprising that dental exams are not yet a routine part of athletic teams' wellness checks. 🦷❤️The mouth serves as a gateway to the rest of the body. Untreated oral infections can lead to the spread of harmful bacteria, affecting the immune system and overall health. Studies have shown that athletes with poor oral health have a higher risk of systemic inflammation, which can significantly impact their performance and recovery. 👟🏆😀Ensuring optimal oral health should be standard practice for athletes at all levels. Kudos to Hansi Flick for his proactive approach towards the wellness of his team! It's disheartening to confront the inaccuracies in the document, especially the misguided assertion that exercise physiologists are merely "self-regulated" and engage in simplistic interventions. This not only misrepresents the profession but also undermines the extensive education and expertise gained through a minimum four-year degree. Exercise physiologists delve into the intricacies of how exercise impacts the entire physiology, surpassing the narrow focus on muscle components. Their knowledge extends to understanding medication effects, making them pivotal in managing patients with complex acute and chronic medical conditions. Reducing their role to "glorified personal training" not only mischaracterises their profession but also disregards their vital contributions. The challenges faced in gaining professional recognition shouldn't overshadow the collaborative potential between physiotherapists and exercise physiologists. The document's attempt to downplay exercise physiologists as "unregistered" is misleading; they adhere to standards through their governing body, Exercise and Sports Science Australia. Emphasising evidence-based practice, staying within professional scopes, and fostering collaboration isn't a mere suggestion; it's essential for optimal patient outcomes. Let's redirect our focus towards acknowledging the profound impact exercise physiologists have on healthcare and dispel these damaging misconceptions. It's time for a factual and respectful recognition of the valuable role exercise physiologists play in promoting holistic health.

Dr Amol Patil, Adjunct Faculty - Sports Management, K J Somaiya Institute of Management, shared his insights in an article titled 'Need of Dedicated Sports Medicine Facilities in India' in HealthCare Radius India Magazine.
