Good, affordable and practical solutions that will make a positive difference to reducing injuries 👍🏻👍🏻
As calving season approaches, the risk of sprain and strain injuries for dairy farmers rises. To tackle this, DairyNZ’s three-year Reducing Sprains and Strains project involved scientists and farmers co-designing practical solutions to keep farmers injury-free and productive during their busiest season. Dr. Callum Eastwood, DairyNZ senior scientist, highlights that the overall aim was to reduce lost time and productivity and support farmers' wellbeing, especially during calving. In 2022 and 2023, there were about 1,500 claims, totalling $5-6 million to ACC each year. By collaborating directly with farmers, the project has designed, tested, and refined innovative products like the Easy-Entry Calf Trailer Gate and Easy-Access Calf Pen Gate. These solutions are already making a difference and are now available through Kea Trailers and Gallagher. Funded by ACC New Zealand's Workplace Injury Prevention Grants programme and DairyNZ, this project is a prime example of how collective effort can lead to tangible, farm-ready innovations. Follow the link to read the full story and discover more about the project’s outcomes. 🚜 See the innovations at Fieldays® 🐄 Join us at the DairyNZ stand (Pavilion at site PC44) from June 12-15 at Mystery Creek, Hamilton and see the Easy-Entry Calf Trailer Gate and Easy-Access Calf Pen Gate.

"Take your children to a farm to show them that food doesn't just come from a box but is grown with care. It's a hands-on way to teach them about farming, food sources, and the environment. The quote emphasizes how important exposing children to the food they consume is. In today's world, where processed and packaged foods dominate, many children need to be more connected to the origins of their meals. Taking them to a farm offers a tangible experience that can shape their understanding and appreciation for agriculture, nature, and the environment. It helps them understand the effort and care that goes into producing food, fostering a sense of respect and gratitude for the food they eat. . . . #FarmEducation #HandsOnLearning #FoodOrigins #AgriculturalAwareness #FarmVisit #TeachKidsAboutFood #FarmingExperience #EnvironmentalEducation #HealthyEating #FoodAppreciation #FarmtoTable #KidsAndFarming #precisiongrow #AgriculturalHeritage #SustainableLiving #FarmLife #FoodEducation #GratitudeForFood #LearningThroughExperience #ConnectingWithNature #FarmAdventure #HealthyFoodChoices #RealFoodExperience

Concerns are emerging that the use of paraquat may be a factor in the development of Parkinson's disease. When delivering farm safety visits I talk farmer through the requirements of the Hazardous Substances Regulations and the Dangerous Goods Act. I recommend that farmers should ensure that they take their employees through how to read a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and my 'go to' substance every time is Paraquat. We know it is toxic and we know that it is deadly. The nature of chemical exposures is that many of the health effects are not immediate and consequentially it is too easy to fall into bad risk taking behaviour. Put chemical safety onto the agenda for your next toolbox meeting.
One of the more difficult and personal stories I've been involved in - but so very important. Everyone deserves a safe workplace. Farmers use these chemicals on the advice of people who are purported to know more. To know better. in this case, farmers, agronomists and local retailers have been let down by the manipulative self interest of a few large companies. https://lnkd.in/gbfQQ4WS
Parkinson's has been called the silent pandemic, and scientists believe a common farm chemical could be one cause
