Exciting News for Internationally Trained Medical Specialists: A New Fast-Track Pathway to Practice in Australia
To my IMG Network,
We're thrilled to share a groundbreaking development that promises to expedite the integration of internationally trained medical specialists into the Australian healthcare system. Recently announced by AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency)'s Medical Board, this initiative aims to address critical healthcare shortages by establishing a streamlined registration process for GPs, Anaesthetists, Obstetricians, and Psychiatrists.
Set to launch in phases starting October 2024 for general practice and December 2024 for anaesthetics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and psychiatry, this new pathway will prioritise specialties identified by jurisdictions with the most acute needs.
Key Features of the New Pathway:
- Specialty Prioritisation: Initially focusing on general practice, anaesthetics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and psychiatry, the program aims to swiftly integrate specialists into underserved rural and regional areas.
- Consultation and Recognition: Collaboration with specialist colleges, including the RACGP, ensures recognition of overseas qualifications that meet Australian standards, facilitating a smoother transition into the healthcare system.
- Safety Measures: To uphold patient safety, new specialists will initially practice under supervision for six months. They will undergo necessary adjustments such as cultural safety training and orientation to Australian healthcare practices.
- Registration and Fellowship: Candidates will apply directly to the Medical Board for specialist registration, bypassing traditional college assessments. However, achieving fellowship with a specialist medical college will not be automatic.
This initiative responds to ongoing medical workforce shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite returning to pre-pandemic migration levels, Australia continues to face challenges in meeting healthcare demands through the current training pipeline. The new pathway aims to attract highly skilled doctors to Australia by simplifying and expediting the registration process.
AHPRA is currently seeking feedback on the registration standards for this pathway, with final approval anticipated from Health Ministers. We are optimistic that these efforts will provide a smoother route to registration for overseas specialists eager to contribute to healthcare in Australia.
Stay tuned for further updates as we progress towards implementing this transformative pathway.

1moSee this is great! I want to know where my excellent customer service is from your billing department. I emailed your billing department back in March with financial information requesting charity care because I was approved for charity care in Harrisburg by Upmc. You are all the same company yes??? I have called many times. I have spoken to many different individuals. I have requested callback after callback after callback and have yet to receive one! On my last phone call, I thought maybe there was a communication error because I could tell we were not speaking from the same native tongue. I stopped the conversation and asked him “Am I speaking to someone in the United States or outside of the United States?” I was told I was speaking to someone outside of the United States, which is really kind of funny because you guys are understaffed here in the states as I’ve heard from staff by mouth. I had requested from this young man that I speak directly to the departments Director and not just a manager. He assured someone would call back just as all of the other people assured someone would call back. I don’t know what else to do. No one seems to want to assist me. Do I go to the news next or to the state rep? Balls in your court.
