Mariannie Matos led a great panel as the Head Director of Academic and Professional Affairs. Big thanks to the panelists for collaborating with us on this program. The guest alumni Hong Huang, MBA Chelsea Lewis, MA, PHR Lauren Valentine Nerissa George, DrPH, MPH offered great advice for career pivots, interviews, and life after UAlbany. Some of my biggest takeaways were:
1) Resumes (and cover letters) should be tailored to the specific job you are applying to. Same with extracurriculars and experience. It is important to explain what skills you have acquired and how they can help you in your transition to a new job.
2) Alongside with Takeaway #1, a better candidate is someone who can sell themselves to the interviewer. This can be by having an elevator pitch prepared that explains what acquired skills will help you, researching the company, and highlighting accomplishments/promotions you have received while working with other companies during your time there.
3) It is okay to take pivots and not have it all figured out even when you think you do. The best way to see what career you will love, is to experience what there is to offer in the world rather than limit yourself to the professions you were exposed to. A good evaluation is to inquire the day-to-day descriptions of the intended careers and see if these align with your interests. It’s okay to go to go back to school for higher education programs when undergrad is over; however, it is also okay to return to school at a later time and spend time after graduation building up job performance skills.
4) Every one moves at different places in life and it is hard not to want to compare yourself to the next person. It may be better if you do not though, as it’s important to stay mindful that you are completing a marathon at your own pace and that you will make it to your goals!
It was an honor to have been a part of an insightful panel discussion last night alongside Hong Huang, MBA, Chelsea Lewis, MA, PHR, and Nerissa George, DrPH, MPH for the University at Albany, SUNY's Career Insight Series. A huge thank you to Mariannie Matos for leading this initiative as the Head Director of Academic and Professional Affairs. Engaging with students eager for guidance on navigating their post-graduation career paths was truly inspiring.
In reflecting on our discussions, I believe there is an opportunity to foster stronger ties between our local colleges and universities and the business community here in the Capital Region. There's a tremendous opportunity to enhance collaboration, ensuring that students not only identify but also pursue meaningful career opportunities, while simultaneously addressing the talent acquisition needs of our local employers.
Such a great opportunity for these students - kudos to everyone involved for making such a positive impact!
