Dean, University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy | Infectious Diseases Pharmacist & Scientist | Medication Expertise for Optimal Patient Outcomes
Thank you Boston Globe Media and American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) a key question: (shortened for space/context) American Pharmacists Association Q. You’re going to be starting as the dean of the College of Pharmacy in January. What are some of your goals? A. I have a vision for the future of the profession, and not just in Rhode Island. Pharmacists are medication experts and medication facilitators - they should have provider status. We have six years of training, you get a doctor of pharmacy - and should be the health care professionals that directly manage patients that are on multiple 13, 14 15 medications. There’s a shortage of primary care physicians /nurse practitioners / PAs out there and they need help managing patients. With multiple medications, there are a lot of drug interactions that should to be managed directly by a pharmacist, and they should be reimbursed for their services and time. Q. Why can’t pharmacists be considered providers right now? A. The American Medical Association has fought proposed federal regulation to block us from taking that role. [As an industry], we’re trying really hard to take that resolution away, but the lobbying is a problem. Breaking through those barriers, politically, is a challenge.
As part of their "Ocean State Innovators" series, Boston Globe Media sat down with Dr. Kerry LaPlante, professor and incoming dean at the University of Rhode Island - College of Pharmacy, to discuss a new research expansion with the Veterans Administration Medical Center and her vision for the future of pharmacy.

What Would It Mean for Scientists to Listen to Patients? According to the New Yorker, the same sense of urgency that propelled the AIDS movement forward may also apply in the search for answers on Long COVID. 'People with post-viral illnesses like Long Covid often feel shut out of the scientific establishment. Two renowned Yale researchers are attempting to bring them in.' "They are taking a non-traditional approach to studying long COVID and similar illnesses, according to the New Yorker: patient-centered research. Larry Becker, is PCORI involved? In the LISTEN (Listen to Immune, Symptom and Treatment Experiences Now) trial, cardiologist Harlan Krumholz, MD, and immunologist Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, are conducting research with continuous patient input. Krumholz and Iwasaki wrote patient participation into their trial design, and they host regular "town halls" where patients can ask questions and give feedback. Though based at Yale, the research is decentralized, meaning patients from all over the world can enroll using an app, and use online journals to write about their experience. The team expects first results from Pax-C, a phase II randomized controlled trial, in June."

After 47 years of medical practice, I wrote my professional memoir to express gratitude for my career, and the patients, mentors, colleagues, and family members who made it possible, Different Drummer A cardiologist’s memoir of imperfect heroes and care for the heart The themes of my memoir are - Every person is on his or her hero journey - the journey of one’s life. I am grateful for my journey. - The practice of medicine, or delivery of healthcare, is an alternative to war as a potential source of heroism (William James' concept from The Varieties of Religious Experience). - Don’t do to others, that which you do not want done to you, is a keystone moral idea for civilized human beings. It is as essential to secular humanism, as to any religion. It is as close to a single universal Law of Human nature as I know (CS Lewis)... - The United States Veterans Affairs healthcare system provides care for America’s Veterans. It also trains doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technologists, and other healthcare providers. It is one of the largest, and most productive, sponsors of clinical research in the world. The people who work for Veterans Affairs Healthcare and the veterans they serve deserve respect and gratitude. - Doctors, nurses, and other providers have among the highest rates among professions of depression, burnout, substance abuse, divorce, and suicide. Individual and system efforts are needed to combat these occupational hazards. - Many of the advances in medical pathophysiology and medical care during the past century derive from advances in clinical research, especially prospective, randomized clinical trials. Taken together, as a discipline, this is clinical epidemiology. #books #reading #writing #memoir #autobiography #coronaryangioplasty #bypasssurgery #revascularization #clincaltrials #veterans #veteransaffairs #doctors #nurses #patients #care #healthcare #clinicalepidemiology #moralequivalentofwar My memoir is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
