MEMBER NEWS | Welcome to Our New Member UP Catalyst!   Based in Estonia, UP Catalyst produces sustainable carbon nanomaterials and graphite directly from CO₂ emissions. These carbon materials have a wide range of applications, including batteries and supercapacitors, paints and coatings, concrete, composites, and electronics.   CO₂ from industrial emissions is pulled into the molten salt synthesis reactor. With the molten salt heated to a high temperature working as an electrolyte, CO₂ undergoes the process of electrolysis. A voltage difference applied to electrodes kick-starts the process of breaking down the CO₂ molecules. As a result, oxygen is released, with carbon being collected and then purified.   To synthesise one ton of green carbon materials, UP Catalyst needs 3.7 tons of gaseous CO₂ and only electricity as an active ingredient. At scale, this method can utilise CO₂ streams from hard-to-abate industries such as concrete, steel, glass, and chemical production, preventing CO₂ from reaching the atmosphere and immobilising it within the carbon material.  Find out more about UP Catalyst at https://upcatalyst.com/.

One of my projects at University of Helsinki was to develop a reversible process for CO2 capture. Our work titled: ''Synergetic effects on the capture and release of CO2 using guanidine and amidine superbases'' was recently published in RSC Sustainability. Bettergy Corp. and the NYSTAR-backed Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics at the University at Buffalo are playing an important role in innovating hydrogen economy. Together, they are developing a novel catalyst and process to convert ammonia into hydrogen in an energy-efficient, cost-effective way. The process allows for the conversation at easier-to-obtain temperatures and reduces the need for precious metals, which address both cost and environmental concerns in hydrogen conversion. ⚡New Opportunity with Innovate UK Circular Critical Materials Supply Chains programme and Ionic Technologies Ionic Technologies are recycling high specification permanent magnets and magnet swarf and have recently opened a 30 tonne/yr. demonstration plant located in the Titanic Quarter, Belfast. End-of-life magnets often arrive at the Ionic Technologies site in Belfast intact, and still magnetised. To be processed further, they need to be demagnetised and crushed and milled to a much smaller particle size, to form a slurry. The solution should: Accept magnets from different feedstock, variable dimensions, and weight (Max Dimensions 90*90*90mm) Use of DI water (DI water supply not to be included in the project). A paper on the recovery of silver from Midsummer's CIGS solar cells has been published in Science Direct. It shows a complete recovery of Ag and ITO particles from a flexible CIGS solar cell with a stainless steel substrate, with purities equal to 95.0 and 70.5 wt%, respectively. Midsummers' solar cells continue to be the probably most recyclable in the world.

Our solar panels are the most sustainable choice for energy generation and circularity is built into our product design.

The #innovation is coming thick and fast from PlasmaLeap Technologies and Pj Cullen in the #circular economy. Our novel plasma reactors are an example of platform tech that can be used to produce a wide variety of valuable chemical products. Nitrates, #ammonia and #hydrocarbons are some of the examples.
