As a Precision Health Practitioner, I often get asked how to make time-restricted eating (TRE) work in real life. The key is finding an approach that fits your schedule and supports your health without feeling restrictive. Night-time is when the body’s "housekeeping" works best—repairing cells and cleaning up damage. By stopping food intake at least 3 hours before bed, you give your body time to focus on essential functions like autophagy—your body’s natural recycling system that removes old, damaged cells. This helps boost immune function and improve overall health. One approach I often recommend is starting with a 12-hour eating window (e.g., 7 am to 7 pm) and gradually compressing it. For many, a 10-hour window (e.g., 9 am to 7 pm) is a realistic, sustainable option that balances social life while still supporting metabolic health. While the exact "best" eating window isn't known for everyone, studies suggest that even a moderate 8 to 10-hour window can be beneficial, particularly for those with metabolic concerns like diabetes.
