🎓 From Academic Abyss to Scholarly Soar: My Journey at Southern Illinois University 🚀 In 1966, as summer embraced the air, my band, The Messengers, dissolved, leaving me at a crossroads. With a little cash in hand, I enrolled in summer school with dreams of academic glory. But alas, the siren call of parties, pursuits, and the allure of libations led me astray, resulting in dismal grades that shook the foundation of my collegiate ambitions. 🔔 However, the wake-up call came swiftly as the Dean of Students summoned me, questioning my commitment to academia. Determined to redeem myself, I vowed to fly right, and fly right I did. With grit and determination, I ascended from academic abyss to the lofty heights of scholarly success, achieving Bs, As, and ultimately, a coveted spot among the four-point elite. 📚 Southern Illinois University became my sanctuary, my haven of knowledge, and my playground of learning. Dr. Delyte Morris, the visionary president, took me under his wing, recognizing my fervor for leadership and thirst for knowledge. As a student ambassador, I became intimately acquainted with every nook and cranny of our sprawling campus, regaling visitors with tales of our esteemed institution. 🌟 But my pursuit of excellence didn't stop there. I embraced the art of selective learning, auditing classes to discern the crème de la crème of educators. I sought out professors who didn't just teach but inspired, who didn't just impart knowledge but ignited passion. 🎙️ It was in the realm of speech that I found my calling, under the tutelage of Professor Paul Hibbs. His convocation series, a weekly pilgrimage for 5,000 freshmen, became my sanctuary of enlightenment. And as I delved into the world of current events, devouring every morsel of information, I realized that my journey wasn't just about academic accolades—it was about becoming wise. 🌐 Today, as I reflect on those formative years at Southern Illinois University, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities, the mentors, and the lessons that shaped me. Today, Adelaide University launches to the world 🌏 We're combining our strengths and legacy with the University of Adelaide to create a new contemporary and for-purpose Australian university. We're in our early thirties and there's a youthful nature to how things are done at UniSA, where everyone can get involved. This start-up approach has underwritten a continuous search for new ways of doing things. We were the first Australian university to articulate graduate qualities in the curriculum, the first to publicly commit to achieving reconciliation with Aboriginal people, the first university to use Innovation Jam technology to crowdsource our strategic direction, and the first tertiary provider to offer higher education apprenticeship degrees in partnership with industry🎓 And it’s also important to keep in mind that we were 135+ unstoppable years in the making. The pioneering schools and colleges that boldly came before us date back to the 1800s, established in response to the needs of South Australia’s developing free colony, including for teaching, art, mining and town planning. Exploring responsible enterprise in a global context has been an intriguing journey during the initial weeks of my second year at university.

To all who are curious about the future of higher education- let’s explore it together in this course.

In recent times, I’ve engaged in enlightening discussions with trustee friends from various colleges and universities. A recurring theme in these conversations has been the pivotal role that Alumni Associations play in assessing and influencing university governance. Notably, recent studies have identified 15 instances in which Alumni Associations initiated a No Vote of Confidence against university leadership. Impressively, 11 of these motions led to constructive changes that realigned the institutions with the expectations and standards envisioned by their communities. This information highlights the significant impact that informed and proactive alumni can have in advocating for excellence and accountability at the highest levels of university administration. As stewards of our institution’s legacy, it is imperative that we consider how we might effectively participate in or influence these governance processes to ensure they meet and maintain the highest standards and integrity. A sleeping giant has be awakened.

Reflecting on an Incredible First Term at Dartmouth College MEM Program 🌿 When I first stepped into Dartmouth's Master of Engineering Management program, I was filled with excitement and curiosity about what lay ahead. Now, as I wrap up my first term, I'm thrilled to share some of the amazing experiences and learnings from these past few months 📖 Academic Exploration: The term has been a rich blend of rigorous learning and practical application. In Energy Conversion 💡, we dove deep into the science and technology behind transforming various energy sources into electricity and usable heat. Engaging with 10 industry experts as guest speakers was a highlight, and my term project comparing the energy portfolios of G20 nations, particularly India and the USA, was both challenging and enlightening. 🏭 In Technology Assessment, I collaborated with a team to work on a project for a decarbonization company. We assessed different green hydrogen production methods and designed a pilot Balance of Plant (BoP) recommendation for our client. This project not only honed my technical skills but also taught me the value of teamwork in complex scenarios. ⚙️ Marketing was a journey through the world of business strategy and customer analysis, where we delved into case studies of brands like Lego, Nespresso, and Netflix. The Markstrat business simulator was an engaging way to apply these concepts in a competitive and practical setting. 🏛️ Professional Skills enriched my knowledge in interpersonal and communication skills, ethics, and business writing. Sessions with industry leaders provided invaluable insights into the professional world.🧳 Beyond the Classroom: Dartmouth isn't just about academics. I had the chance to explore breathtaking places like Mount Washington, Bretton Woods, and cities like Boston and New York. Each trip was an adventure, adding to my memorable experiences here. And yes, my first pancake with maple syrup at Lou's Bakery was as delightful as it sounds!🥞 Working at the Dartmouth Sustainability Office, I embarked on a project focused on the energy optimization of campus buildings. This hands-on experience has been a perfect complement to my academic pursuits, and I eagerly look forward to continuing this work in the winter term.🏕️ Looking Ahead: As January approaches, I am excited for the winter term. There's so much more to learn, experience, and contribute.
