Happy Pride 🌈, everyone! Steven Portericker, University Settlement’s Chief Program and Equity Officer, shared this message: “For me, Pride is a time to celebrate my journey, including the ways I’ve fought for self-love, and the communities who have supported me along the way. Why celebrate Pride? Let me count the ways. - Pride is the moments when young people I’ve worked with have thanked me privately for creating safe spaces and modeling self-acceptance - Pride is my ability to get engaged to my partner as a same-gender loving Black man - Pride is the excitement my 10-year-old niece displayed when I told her I was engaged - Pride is knowing that your grandmother, who was born in 1929, is proud of you and supported you always - Pride is the opportunities today’s young people and future generations will have to be their authentic selves, regardless of the letter they represent in the LGBTQIA+ 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ - Pride is my responsibility and opportunity to strategically lead University Settlement’s efforts to become more equitable for our teams and the communities we serve” #Pride #NYCisUS

As we approach the celebration of Juneteenth on June 19th, it's important to reflect on its historical significance and the lessons it imparts for our ongoing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) efforts. Juneteenth, a combination of "June" and "nineteenth", commemorates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure that all enslaved people were freed. This was two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is the oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States. Recognizing Juneteenth is not just about acknowledging a historical event, but also about understanding its relevance in today's context. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of racial equity and justice. It places Black people at the center of the conversation about freedom, its meaning, and manifestation in this nation. In the context of DEIB, Juneteenth is a significant reminder that marginalized groups often face microaggressions, bias, and other obstacles in the workplace. Recognizing Juneteenth contributes to a more diverse, inclusive, and respectful work environment. As we observe Juneteenth, let's commit to making a difference. Let's strive to create an environment where everyone feels valued and included. Let's continue to learn, grow, and work towards a more equitable world. 🌍 #Juneteenth #DEIB #Inclusion #Diversity #Equity #Belonging

There is a long history of solidarity between the Black and Asian communities in the U.S. Our roots of solidarity extend well before the Civil Rights Movement. It’s borne out of necessity and survival. It’s important to recognize that marginalized populations have been pitted against each other in order to perpetuate power by those who wield it for control. For example, the model minority myth was socially engineered in public policy and rhetoric that attempted to define what constitutes a “good minority” versus a “bad minority.” This doesn’t sit well with me. Anyone who has been marginalized should refuse to be used as a wedge against the Black community (or any community). This is often defined as anti-blackness, and it takes all of us to counteract it. In my new role, I have embraced one of the Office of Equity’s core values: Ubuntu. I am what I am because of who we all are. We are all connected in humanity, and any act of devaluing our family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors… is a cut that deepens the wound of previous injustices that we all feel. We can recover from this by recognizing the wedging when it happens. We can heal from it. We can use relational partnership and build allyship, understanding of history from the perspectives of those who were subjected to oppressive forces, and work together to eradicate the results we have inherited. . . . . . . . #BlackHistory #AsianAmericans #AsianAmericanHistory #ANHPI #Solidarity #ModelMinorityMyth #EquityAndBelonging #Equity

Belonging is a fundamental human need, but it can be a challenging goal for Black gay men due to the lack of representation in mainstream culture. Fortunately, GMAD provides a safe and supportive space for Black gay men to be themselves and belong to a community. The Friday Night Forum helps Black gay men strengthen their bonds with anti-oppression allies and address their unique needs. The forum provides a safe space for Black gay men to share their stories, express their feelings, and find mutual support. It also serves as a platform for social change and motivates the community to act. In a broken and hate-filled world, finding the grace to interact with each other is difficult, but it is worth every step of the journey. GMAD is a partner on your empowerment journey.

This momentous occasion represents the triumph of freedom over oppression and serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and justice. At W Talent Solutions, we recognize the importance of Juneteenth and stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues, clients, and communities. I cultivate organizations and companies through anti-oppression culture shift + I educate around tech justice and AI ethics
Oppression is built on the centuries of putting white cis het patriarchal ableist colonial dominant culture at the foundation. In the world we currently live in, it is accurate to state that removing and reducing “DEI” programming is actively promoting oppression. Striking DEI efforts means that organization is actively ENDORSING white supremacy, transphobia, ableism, patriarchy, anti-immigrant sentiment, anti-LGBTQIA sentiment, and colonization. Let us not mince words. Let us not try to make it palatable. That entity is an Oppression Organization, nothing less. We must be very real in witnessing what is taking place. Build and support organizations that are doing more for equity, not less.
