In the Indo-Pacific, experts say the issue of supply chains has recently transformed from being focused on trade and economics to being seen as highly strategic. This online panel will explain why supply chains at sea are so important in the transition to cleaner energy, discussing the impacts of increased geopolitical tensions and non-traditional maritime security issues in the region. Delving into the intricate developments surrounding the Houthi Red Sea invasion, it is significant to recognise that this geopolitical phenomenon has not only regional ramifications but also profound implications for global trade and security. The recent Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have triggered debates on international platforms. The United States, among other nations, faces challenges in formulating a response that ensures regional stability without escalating tensions further. The Security Council's imminent vote on a draft resolution reflects the urgency of addressing these violations of international law. These events, coupled with the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, underscore the fragile nature of maritime security. The impact on shipping routes and supply chains raises concerns about global trade disruptions, accentuating the interconnectedness of our world. #RedSea #HouthiAttacks #MaritimeSecurityPerspectives #GlobalSecurityDialogues #SustainableMaritimeFuture #InclusiveSeas Photo Credit: Politico, CNBC

The Red Sea shipping crisis underscores vital lessons for professionals in global trade and supply chain management such as: 1. Strategic diversification: the importance of having alternative shipping routes and suppliers to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions and disruptions. 2. Global Collaboration and Security: the crisis highlights the need for international collaboration to secure critical trade routes. Joint efforts in intelligence-sharing, security measures, and diplomatic initiatives are important for maintaining safe and open shipping lanes. #LessonsLearnt #RedSea #StrategicDecisions #SupplyChainManagement

Strategic Analyst at HCSS - Principal Researcher at Europe in the Indo-Pacific Hub | Geopolitics and geoeconomics of the Indo-Pacific | European security and defence policy | Policy analysis
How much trade passes through the main Indo-Pacific maritime chokepoints? What commodities are the most traded between European and Indo-Pacific states? And why are narrow waterways such as the Suez Canal and Strait of Malacca threatened by geopolitical and security risks? In our new policy brief, we discuss these questions by providing an analysis of the trade of high, medium and low value-added goods between Asia and Europe. We also develop an assessment of geopolitical and security risks threatening the openness of maritime chokepoints. As an estimated 80% of global trade by volume and 70% by value moves via cargo ships, any significant delay caused by obstructions to maritime chokepoints could severely disrupt the global economy causing shipping delays, backlogged ports, rerouting, and disruptions of global value chains. To counterbalance the uncertainty surrounding the US ability and willingness to provide the resources necessary to keep chokepoints in the Indo-Pacific open as well as Europe’s scarce naval capability and geographical distance from many of these maritime bottlenecks, Europeans should look at enhancing their cooperation with Indo-Pacific states. Maritime trade is the most economically efficient means for global exchanges of goods. However, maritime chokepoints are extremely vulnerable to geopolitical risks, demanding strategic attention. In a new HCSS policy brief, Paul van Hooft, Benedetta Girardi, Giovanni Cisco and Alisa Hoenig delve into key passageways for maritime trade, associated risks, and possible solutions. Thoughts on new regime issues here.
Have you ever considered whether “A new configuration of strategic trade control regimes” is possible? Or likely? Or even desirable? In light of the recent #geopolitical developments and the ensuing #challenges to #strategictrade controls, as well as the discussions that have emerged on a #new configuration of strategic #tradecontrol #regimes, the #ChaudfontaineGroup explored the potential consequences of the ongoing geopolitical transformations and #fragmentations on the #future of the #multilateral #exportcontrol #regimes in the medium term. A huge thank you to Dr. Quentin Michel and all the participants of the 13th Chaudfontaine Group Meeting and the European Commission for supporting this work! #ChaudfontaineGroup #strategictrade #exportcontrol #AustraliaGroup #NSG #WassenaarArrangement #MTCR #dualuse #futurescenarios # ESU Uliège European Commission https://lnkd.in/eCEAiaTv

For the first time, the world faces simultaneous disruptions in two major global maritime trade waterways, with far-reaching implications for inflation and food and energy security. Since November 2023, escalating attacks on ships in the Red Sea have been compounding disruptions in the Black Sea caused by the war in Ukraine and in the Panama Canal due to climate-induced droughts. Developing countries are particularly vulnerable to these disruptions and UNCTAD remains vigilant in monitoring the evolving situation. The United Nations trade & development body emphasizes the urgent need for swift adaptations from the shipping industry and robust international cooperation to manage the rapid reshaping of global trade.
