Please join us in congratulating attending physician Dr. Ana Sofia Warner on her recent New Faculty Excellence Award from the Boston University Medical Group! In her nomination, her colleagues described her as, "a true bridge-builder and innovator". Dr. Warner created and launched BMC's Hospital Admission Reduction Program (HARP), which provides community-based transitional care to patients 65 and up who have been hospitalized at BMC. 💭 What does “excellence in care” mean to you? For me, it means trying to give the best care to the patients I see in clinic. It also means trying to improve care for patients I may never meet, through programs like HARP and partnerships with different groups and departments. 💭 How is BMC pushing the boundaries of care? I think there are a lot of folks at BMC who are very creative thinkers in terms of how we can engage with patients in our community. I see this every day with the amazing members of the HARP team, they go the extra mile for patients and that makes a big difference. 💭 What does rewriting healthcare mean to you? It means thinking outside the box of how we can engage patients to meet them where they are at. It means not being so tied to traditional ways of treating patients. That’s why our HARP program goes to people's houses. We realized we needed to be proactive after patients were discharged from the hospital, or they would end up coming back into the Emergency Department. 💭 How are you providing equitable and excellent clinical care? I speak Spanish, and I think for some patients it's a big relief to see a physician who speaks their own language. In my work at the Belkin Breast Center, there's a lot of nuance in some of the breast cancer counseling, so I feel like being bilingual is especially important. 💭 What’s special about working at BMC? I get to work with really smart, talented, and dedicated people every day. And we get to try to tackle some really hard problems in health care for patients who are often underserved. An inspiring but frustrating book Buried or Planted to read by Stephanie S. Abbott, MBA, CLSSBB, FACHE that captures her cancer survival journey with a great deal of POOR experiences in care, treatments, communication and compassion. Our healthcare CAN BE better than this and MUST BE. I challenge our various Boards of Medicine, Nursing, and essentially all colleges and certifying bodies relevant to healthcare to consider this book as part of their required reading. The Baylor College of Medicine is currently conducting a research study on the evolving role of specialist palliative care in the management of patients requiring ECMO support, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. 💕 Why does Clinical Research matter? Because, in the end, baby Owen's innovative, life-saving procedure at Duke University Health System (a partial heart transplant where the donated heart parts are growing with him 1 year into his life, a world first!) has to be proven to be more than an amazing one-off miracle. Clinical research, including clinical trials, will be essential for the development of new medical procedures such as Owen's. Clinical research will help ensure that the procedure is safe, effective, and reliable, and that it can be used to improve the lives of patients who need it most. Why is Owen's life-saving transplant and others like it potentially a breakthrough that could save thousands of lives, especially those waiting for a heart that may never come in time? Enter the 'domino heart transplant' - a patient with healthy valves but needing stronger heart muscle could receive a new heart BUT then donate their healthy valves to a patient with unhealthy valves, creating the 'domino effect'. This has happened 13 times at 4 centers around the world, including 9 times at Duke in Durham, NC. If vetted by clinical trials, this could potentially DOUBLE the # of hearts available for transplant into children with life-threatening heart diseases. Beyond the 3,300+ waiting list in the U.S. for a new heart to vital organs in general, there was a record-breaking 42,000+ transplants performed in 2022 with a waiting list more than 100K people long. Among the 1,700+ children and teens who receive organ transplants yearly, some children waiting for transplants die, having waited for more than a year. Scoring on waiting lists still often favors adults who are sicker- a fact that rocked me upon learning. Know hope. Believe in Clinical Research and human ingenuity. Leading European Hospitals are implementing H2O outcome sets We are over the moon about a very important milestone for making patient-centric healthcare in Europe a reality. Members of the European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA) are rolling out H2O outcome sets to collect patient-reported outcomes in a standardized way. Together, we have defined standards for collecting patient-reported outcomes and testing them in the clinical day-to-day. What has been a vision for long, is now becoming reality as the project is entering the implementation phase.   Among the first to implement H2O outcome sets are the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the MedUni Wien. Already two clinics within Charité – in the area of IBD and diabetes - are using the so-called H2O pragmatic sets, aiming at keeping the effort around the collection process itself as low as possible, for patients and clinicians. Also, the Medical University Vienna has started to use the H2O outcome sets in their diabetes clinic for collecting PROs. A major milestone not only for patients and clinicians, but also for researchers all over the world. My NHS Confederation colleague Sarah Ferry has written a fantastic new report - Opportunities, openness and obstacles: NHS partnerships with the life sciences industry. This is based on research we have undertaken to understand the NHS’s appetite for partnering with the life sciences industry, highlighting examples of previous partnership working and inspiring members to explore the potential opportunities available to them through partnering. The report sets out the interest and opportunities of the NHS partnering with the life sciences industry. This shows our members see value across a range of project types from pathway transformation to knowledge sharing. Awareness, however, of the different project types varies. Partnering with the life sciences industry enables projects that may not be possible otherwise and the report showcases the art of the possible. It also shows examples of how barriers to partnership working can be overcome. This independent research has been sponsored by AstraZeneca – many thanks for their support. From the bustling corridors of a subspecialty hospital to the close-knit community of a local hospital, my journey as a physician has been nothing short of enlightening. I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to manage complex cases and participate in research as a hospitalist in an academic setting. The wealth of resources, the availability of diverse procedures, and the intellectual camaraderie of colleagues have all enriched my experience and enabled me to make a significant impact on the field in my own little ways. Currently, as an oncologist in a community hospital, my role has shifted towards providing top-tier cancer care services to our local community. The focus is on individualized care - impacting not just patients, but their families and our community. It's a different kind of impact, but equally profound. There's so much that physicians in both settings can learn from each other. Academic physicians can benefit from the resourcefulness and patient-centric approach of community practitioners. Conversely, community physicians can gain from the research-oriented, multidisciplinary approach that characterizes academic medicine. Misconceptions abound on both sides, often leading to unnecessary competition. Instead, let's focus on the common good and the shared goal of patient wellbeing. Let's debunk myths, foster collaboration, and ensure that no patient is lost in the transition. So, I invite you to join this conversation. What are some action steps we can take to bridge the gap and foster better collaboration between academic and community physicians? Let's discuss and learn from each other's experiences.
