Last week, the University of Kentucky hosted Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, director of the National Institutes of Health, at the Healthy Kentucky Research Building — a space where multidisciplinary teams look for solutions to reduce health disparities greatly impacting Kentucky. “We are grateful to the NIH and Director Bertagnolli for the continued support of biomedical research conducted at UK. It fuels our ability to improve the health of Kentuckians,” said Lisa Cassis, Ph.D., UK vice president for research. “It was a pleasure to share how UK is leading the nation in health disparity and community-based research.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/eNFD3Cyk

Closing this seminar season with speaker Dr. Christian Ochsner, who is an Assistant Professor at CERGE-EI and a Research Associate at SIAW-University of St. Gallen. His research focuses on understanding how critical moments in history shape socio-economic trajectories and still impact society today. His work delves into development economics, political economy, and cultural economy, exploring the role of new technologies and the origins of societal norms and behaviors. In a recent study, Dr. Ochsner investigated the impact of the 1918 influenza pandemic on communities and families, specifically looking at how adverse health shocks influenced health behavior and policy statements. By analyzing individual death-register data and political support for compulsory vaccination, Dr. Ochsner found that higher flu mortality led to decreased support for vaccination and health technologies, while also affecting perceptions towards healthcare, technology, and education reforms. This research sheds light on the public reactions to major health crises and highlights the challenges in advancing health policy and technology during times of crisis. https://buff.ly/4aP8a5C

A Tale of Two Roosevelts: Shaping America’s Health and Research Legacy This Presidents’ Day, I’d like to focus on a remarkable historical coincidence: two Roosevelts, distant cousins, each pioneering monumental institutions in American public health and research. Their contributions, separated by decades, are intertwined in a legacy that profoundly impacts our lives today. Theodore Roosevelt, a name synonymous with the rugged outdoors and the Progressive Era’s reforms, laid the cornerstone for modern consumer protection and public health with the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. This act, a direct precursor to the establishment of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was a revolutionary step forward in ensuring the safety of food and medicines. At a time when public outcry demanded action against unregulated products, Theodore’s leadership heralded a new era of consumer rights and safety standards. Fast forward to the 20th century, and another Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, expanded the horizon of American medicine and research by transforming the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1930. Under his presidency, the NIH evolved from a modest collection of laboratories into a world-leading hub for medical research. Franklin’s vision for a healthier future propelled the United States to the forefront of the battle against diseases, affirming the critical role of federal investment in health and science. The Roosevelt legacy in public health and research is not just a tale of two Presidents but a continuum of American innovation and welfare. Both Roosevelts, with their bold initiatives, underscored the belief that a nation’s greatness is measured not only by its economic strength but also by the health and well-being of its citizens. Their foresight in establishing the FDA and NIH has saved countless lives and continues to inspire a commitment to scientific advancement and public health. In their story, is a powerful reminder of how visionary leadership can shape a healthier, safer future for all. #PresidentsDay #Leadership #PublicHealth #FDA #NIH #RooseveltLegacy Illustration EMxDE3

University Seminar titled 'My Health, My Right' I am thrilled to organize an inter-collegiate University Seminar titled 'My Health, My Right' on March 9th, 2024, marking World Health Day with a focus on universal health rights. As the guiding force behind the 'My Health, My Right' seminar, I anticipate a transformative dialogue on health rights. This event, under my direction, will explore the intersection of health, human rights, and global challenges. The seminar will discuss the right to health amidst global challenges such as conflict and pollution. It will advocate for equitable access to healthcare, emphasizing the importance of clean air, water, and nutrition. By integrating human rights into health systems, we aim to address health disparities and champion everyone's right to essential services and a healthy environment. Together, we'll explore how health equity and human rights are crucial for well-being and how nations can fulfill their obligations to uphold these rights. This seminar is an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to a world where health is a right, not a privilege.

TNBC Survivor,Breast, Colon Cancer Patient Advocate. Clinical Trial Participant ,Founder, Trials of Color & Saving Pennies 4 A Cure | TNBC Survivor | Speaker | Author,Leadership,
🌟 Today, we celebrate Clinical Trials Day! 🌟 I am incredibly proud to be among the 5% of individuals who actively participate in clinical trials and research. Our contributions are vital to advancing medical science and improving healthcare outcomes for everyone. However, it deeply saddens me to acknowledge that black and brown communities are still underrepresented and often overlooked in these crucial conversations. Diversity in clinical trials is not just a goal; it's a necessity. Without it, we risk missing out on groundbreaking discoveries that could benefit all racial and ethnic groups. 💡 Why is diversity in clinical trials so important? 1. **Better Health Outcomes**: Diverse participation ensures that research findings are applicable to a broader population, leading to more effective treatments for everyone. 2. **Equity in Healthcare**: Including black and brown individuals in research helps address health disparities and promotes fairness in medical advancements. 3. **Innovation**: Diverse perspectives can lead to innovative solutions and new approaches to healthcare challenges. Join us today at 3:45 PM on Facebook at https://lnkd.in/eqapq-Az to learn more about the significance of clinical trials and why your involvement matters. Together, we can work towards a future where everyone has a voice in medical research and where our communities are equally represented and cared for. Let’s make Clinical Trials Day not just a celebration but a call to action for greater inclusivity and diversity in research. 🌍💉🧬 #ClinicalTrialsDay #DiversityInResearch #BlackAndBrownCommunities #HealthcareEquity #JoinTheConversation #trialsofcolor #getyourbuttchecked
