This is about #staffing. Use of #AI is sold to hospital administrators as a way to hire fewer nurses and reduce the highest cost in an operating #budget. #Nurses are no more “anti-tech” than #doctors are. We clinicians see the power and promise of technology, but have seen repeated (mis)use of technology that *could* serve humans - patients and clinicians - in #healthcare but instead is deployed to serve budgets at the expense of humans. Before you read this as “nurse are anti-tech”, dig deeper. What drives that distrust? What is the past history? Even in 2018 in Boston, recall #nursing strike against different #technology in the #NICU or #neonatal #ICU, akin to a pager, that would enable a #nurse to cover more patients from a greater physical distance. Overall, speaking as both a patient and a #doctor, having a nurse be physically close to a patient does matter, both for #safety and for #patientexperience. Reducing bedside presence of nursing by #AI is not how we should be deploying AI. At my mother’s end-of-life, parts of which were a literal horror show, much of what drove bad behaviors that was nursing shortages and hourly cost of travel nurses. The nurse manager knew each hour my mother lived was more expensive travel nurse time. My family - like many families were in #COVID - was bullied to sign a #DNR and then to disconnect. This would save the hospital money with less nurse pay. (I can’t rule out bias or -isms as well.) This was at the most stressful moment of our lives, after the system had already failed to protect my mother. Having been in the executive suite myself, and with 70% of hospital board members from banking and finance, I know too well how hospitals are run and how hospital administrators think and decide. There are a lot of places to apply AI humanistically. Rather than frame this as nurses protesting AI, understand the past history as well as the incentives of AI in hospitals. Nurses are concerned about patient safety.
The demonstration was organised by the California Nurses Association, who believe the hospital industry is rushing to implement #AI technology that is untested and unregulated – and could harm patients #DigitalHealth #eHealth #HealthIT #MedTech #HealthTech https://lnkd.in/d9Xjnq7H

More than 9 in 10 nurses in a recent survey agree that repeated needlesticks negatively impact the patient experience. They are calling for alternatives to improve care and workflow. BD has a One Stick Hospital Stay aspiration and works with health systems to ensure the right device is used in the right patient at the right time. Check out more survey results below. https://lnkd.in/gH85Yz8e #PatientExperience #NeedlestickChallenges #OneStickStayVision #BDemployee
