Crisis Stabilization Units (CSUs) provide critical inpatient-level support for individuals needing more than the standard 23-hour observation. With 24/7 nursing, daily psychiatrist contact, and average stays of three to five days, on-site CSUs ensure continuity of care while minimizing delays and redundancies. These units are designed with safety and privacy in mind, focusing on high-level support while also preparing individuals for community-based care through interdisciplinary teams and peer interventions. Together, CSUs create a comprehensive approach to mental health support, bridging the gap between crisis management and recovery. Want to learn more about how CSUs are transforming recovery journeys? Call for Prescribers to Staff the Wisconsin Buprenorphine Hotline We (Wisconsin Society for Addiction Medicine) are recruiting physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to help staff the Wisconsin Buprenorphine Hotline. The Wisconsin Buprenorphine Hotline is a pilot of a free, statewide, low-barrier telemedicine bridge clinic for treatment of opioid use disorder. Interested in participating? Please fill out a survey here. https://lnkd.in/g7aAJ4Nq Prescriber Requirements: 2 years of experience prescribing buprenorphine for treatment of opioid use disorder Active Wisconsin Medical License or equivalent NP/PA state certification Current DEA registration with authority to prescribe schedule III controlled substances Ability to work at least 1-2 eight-hour Hotline shifts per month Participation in Hotline orientation and at least 2 hours of Hotline training per year on best practices for diagnosing and treating opioid use disorder by telemedicine Hotline Details: The Wisconsin Buprenorphine Hotline will initially operate four days per week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday) from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm. People seeking help with their opioid use disorder will call the statewide 2-1-1 system and be transferred to the Hotline. Callers will be evaluated for opioid use disorder, receive prescriptions for buprenorphine and naloxone if indicated and have a referral made to an outpatient buprenorphine prescriber in their area. Hotline staff trained as peer recovery coaches will follow up with patients until they are seen by an outpatient prescriber. This project will create access to buprenorphine and naloxone outside of standard business hours for people across the state of Wisconsin and will serve as a low-barrier entry point to continuing treatment with community prescribers. In Rhode Island, a similar hotline proved successful in starting people on buprenorphine and 71% of people who started buprenorphine from their hotline were still in treatment after 30 days. A schematic of the Hotline workflow is below. FAQs: My health system doesn’t allow moonlighting. How can I help with the hotline? We have allocated a portion of the grant funding for legal assistance to negotiate with health systems to allow their employees to participate in the hotline. No single health system in our state can staff a hotline like this so we need to work together to help people in crisis. I can’t commit to working 1-2 shifts every month because my schedule is variable. Can I participate in the Hotline? It’s okay to work zero shifts one month and two shifts the next month. We do request that people work at least 10 shifts per year. Who is funding this hotline? This project is funded by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services through grant support to the Wisconsin Society of Addiction Medicine (WISAM). We have grant support from DHS for 2 years of Hotline operations.

Currently seeking a programmatic, research, or public health role. MPH with program evaluation experience. Completed internship & fellowship with the CDC. Trauma-informed. Group facilitator, trainer. Nurse Practitioner.
In 2012, I became a nurse. In 2018, a nurse practitioner. My career includes time in the pediatric intensive care unit, inpatient psychiatry, community mental health, global health, inpatient palliative care, public health, and the emergency department. In speaking about my experiences with non-clinicians, I’ve learned many people assume it is difficult to see how disease can ravage the body. My experience, however, is that the real toll is taken from witnessing the damage from inequitable access and treatment, from violence inflicted on a person by another, and from failures of the health system that result in a preventable loss of health, trust, vitality, hope, and life. In speaking with colleagues, I know I am not alone. This is only one reason why the solution to “burnout” (more accurately described as moral injury) requires meaningful changes to health and social service systems intended to prevent and alleviate human suffering. We need to work together to change the wiring, not replace the bulbs.

The original graduate programs for nurse practitioners (NPs) emerged in the 1960s to enhance public access to healthcare, particularly pediatric care, amidst a growing physician shortage. This innovative model was designed to empower advanced practice providers, including psychiatric nurse practitioners, to address critical gaps in healthcare delivery. Today, psychiatric nurse practitioners play a pivotal role in mental health care by conducting assessments, diagnosing patients, and providing treatment independently or collaboratively with physicians. In many states, psychiatric NPs have expanded prescriptive authority, allowing them to prescribe medications and manage care plans autonomously. Since their inception, psychiatric nurse practitioners have significantly contributed to expanding access to mental health treatment, offering crucial support amid the persistent shortage of psychiatrists and mental health providers. Allow our team to assist your organization in identifying Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners.
