The theme for the 2024 edition of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) is “No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all”. IDAHOBIT, celebrated annually on 17 May, is a global initiative that aims to raise awareness about discrimination, violence, and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. Decided during extensive consultations with LGBTIQ organizations from across the world, the theme will allow for advocacy and celebrations in many forms – be it from human rights defenders, LGBTIQ civil society groups, millions of people in our communities, and our allies. Only through solidarity for each other will we create a world without injustice, where no one is left behind.

As #pridemonth comes to an end, it's important to remember that #diversity remains a significant topic in many areas, including #clinicaltrials, where too many people are invisible. We need to ensure everyone is represented and has the same opportunity to benefit from medical progress. While I am still soaked in the endorphin of completing all my IGCSE exams, I'd like to discuss an important issue in our community. Specifically, the minority stress faced by #LGBTQIA+ individuals in their daily lives. Some of my peers have bravely shared both positive and challenging experiences of identifying as part of the LGBTQIA+ community or being an ally. It's crucial to recognize that as a #minoritygroup, they often face #discrimination, #prejudice and other #stressors - as evidenced by considerable scientific research like the #MinorityStressModel and Multiple Minority Stress and LGBT Community Resilience among Sexual Minority Men (McConnell, Janulis, Phillips, Truong, & Birkett, 2018). While acceptance and support are growing significantly, there is still work to be done in creating truly safe and nurturing environments. As it is #PrideMonth, I wanted to share two useful resources for supporting the mental well-being of Hong Kong's LGBTQIA+ population: - This community directory from Mind HK lists local services and resources available: https://lnkd.in/d9j3ZeUd - A video I created for my former secondary school two years ago introduces the concept of active listening - a critical tool for providing non-judgmental support so others feel heard during difficult times. https://lnkd.in/dDTqQuyn As allies, continuing to educate ourselves and offer compassionate support are small but important ways to make progress on this important issue.
