We toured Epic here in Madison a few weeks ago, and we had a BLAST. 🎉🎉🎉 (Local peeps: did you know you could just TOUR Epic for free on the weekends? Talk about the best winter-with-kids activity ever!) 🤩 One of the coolest things we saw (and this is REALLY saying something, seeing there's no shortage of cool things at Epic 🤗) was something called "The Borrowdega." 🪅 The Borrowdega is essentially a "rental store" for team events. It's a WHOLE room where you can rent different games & fun stuff to do for the sake of team building. Warning: Personal post. I’m often asked what role EPIC People has played in my career. It’s not an overstatement to say it has been central. I was lucky enough to attend the first conference and discover “my people”. Ever since it’s been my professional home in the world. A source of intellectual inspiration and practical wisdom. Most importantly for me its led to enduring friendships and professional relationships. I can’t imagine my career to date without EPIC. I can’t imagine the profession I’ve spent the last 24 years working in existing in its current form without EPIC. For those who’ve been alongside me within EPIC for some of those two decades I hope the same is true for you. For those starting out I contend the same will be true for you over your career too. Our industry has been through peaks and troughs. Bursts of optimism and bouts of pessimism. There are anxieties now. But for many EPIC remains a safe harbour. A place to discuss and responds to these shifts. A community that, through resilience and a stubborn commitment to bringing the human dimension to organisational and business life, pushes at defining what this means. And what form it can or should take.  When I was asked if I’d become Board president I said yes without hesitation. I probably should have asked more about what sort of commitment it might involve. (Short answer: More than I thought). But the opportunity to serve a community that has given me so much is an honour. This week, we’re asking lapsed or on-the-fence members of the community to step up. We’re appealing to people’s self-interest. We’re asking you to support a community which will repay your commitment and involvement in spades. In purely instrumental terms it’s a no-brainer. 1 year ago today, I celebrated my first day at Epic Web! I've spoken about my fears and how my team and my leaders put those to rest. I've talked about a few of the things I've had to learn to be successful in my role and how exciting it's been to learn again. Now that it's been a full year, I'm reflecting on the difference this role has made in my life. It's a job, it's not all of who I am but, for the first time, I feel valued. My team, our clients, and leadership have communicated this to me in countless ways. I no longer have to hear "No one exceeds expectations, what would you have to strive for?" in a review. (What a crock of crap that is but, that's for another time). I do get to hear things like "What did we do before you?" and "Client Success is exactly what they needed, communication is so much better!" Who doesn't want to hear that? So, (for what it's worth) my advice is - don't give up and don't settle. You spend too much time at work/working to spend it feeling less than or like just another cog in the wheel. That's not to say that I haven't worked with incredible people who have made me who I am because they've seen things in me that I didn't and pushed me to go for more. Quite the opposite - I've taken their advice put it into practice and I'm passing it on to you. Happiness and joy are not the same thing. Happiness is fleeting and subjective. Joy is contentment with who you are amid your unhappiness. Let it serve as a reminder that you can choose. Also, go get 'em, I believe in you!

It is with mixed emotions to share that I have resigned from EPIC iO and will be starting a new adventure soon. I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to have lead EPIC iO. Being the CEO of EPIC iO has been the some of the most rewarding and challenging times of my career. EPIC iO is an acronym for a culture code that I strongly believe in. I have seen so much #Extreme Ownership at EPIC over the years from bringing a new company together during COVID, building products from just an idea to millions in revenue to even dealing with unexpected setbacks like fires or illness. #ProblemSolving has been at the core of not only EPIC iO, but was a foundation of each of the companies we brought together. IntelliSite, DeepVision, Broad Sky Networks, and Twenty 20 Solutions. #Integrity We tried to always do the right thing for our customers, partners, and employees. We did not always get it right but we approached every decision with the goal of doing what was right and fair. I am so thankful for the Customers who trusted their #Success to EPIC. We did not take that trust lightly. #Innovation. We did not look to just innovate with our software and products, we innovated with our partnerships, our marketing and approach to everything we did. I saw so many examples of people working together as #One Team to launch a product, help a customer, fix an internal process, step up when someone needed it. It is crazy to believe that in the first year during the height of COVID, we brought together 3 companies, launched a new HQ, and built new products without missing a beat. I would never have expected when we launched EPIC, 4 years later EPIC’s revenue would have grown 10X and we would have offices in Australia, Argentina, Costa Rica, SC, TX, OR, CA and people all across the US. I am humbled by the people I have worked with. I am humbled that I was given this opportunity, and I am so thankful I was able to be a part of EPIC’s journey. I will never be able to share all the ways that so many of EPIC iO team touched me or made a difference in my life. I can literally thank almost every employee, peer, and boss I have worked with over the years, but I especially want to thank a few people who have been with me not only at EPIC but in numerous roles in my career. You all have made my life better and I owe you so much. Thank you Kelly Carlberg, Chris Jenkins, Michael Knight, JP Kenney, Nick Thermenos, Neyla S., Tami Booth, and Justin Christiansen. I also have been so fortunate to be able to learn from and work with my Mom and Dad (Cindy Mills and Jim Mills) as well as my son Aaron Mills. It has been a wonderful experience to share my professional journey with my family. Finally, I would not have been able to accomplish anything without the support of my wife and my kids.
