Happy International Women's Day! Today we celebrate our students, apprentices and staff who are breaking boundaries, leading change and inspiring many around them. Today also aligns with the start of British Science Week, also known as STEM Week. With this year's theme, "Inspire Inclusion," what better way to celebrate than by spotlighting some of GC's incredible women lecturers in STEM fields? Enhancing Australia's STEM Diversity: A Strategy for Innovation Diversity in STEM isn't just beneficial; it's a necessity for innovation. The Department of Industry, Science and Resources "Pathway to Diversity in STEM Review" underscores urgent inclusivity needs, offering strategic paths to enhance diversity in Australia's STEM fields. It addresses the critical underrepresentation of diverse groups and outlines actionable strategies. Key Business Roles Include: - Educational Partnerships: Collaborate with institutions to support underrepresented groups. - STEM Program Support: Sponsor programs to increase diverse participation. Workplace Learning: Promote continuous STEM learning and development. - Policy Advocacy: Advocate for policies that support STEM education for all. - Promoting Diversity: Highlight diverse role models to inspire future generations. Expanding on SDGs: This initiative directly supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering a roadmap for inclusive progress, which we raised in our submission: - SDG 4 - Quality Education: Targets aim to equip youth and adults with relevant skills for employment and entrepreneurship (4.4), and to eliminate gender disparities in education (4.5), ensuring equitable access to STEM fields. - SDG 5 - Gender Equality: Focuses on leveraging technology for women's empowerment (5.b) and securing women's leadership across all decision-making levels (5.5), crucial for diversifying STEM fields. - SDG 10 - Reduced Inequalities: Emphasises the empowerment and inclusion of all, regardless of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion, or economic or other status (10.2), advocating for policies that ensure equality (10.3). How will your organization contribute to these goals? BCSDA Members will be reflecting on these findings to consider strategic actions that not only mitigate risks but also harness opportunities for growth through diversity. Young Women Engineer of the year awards a now open for applications!   Alongside this Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) have shared findings from their recent survey which explores some of the underlying reasons why women are still underrepresented in the STEM workforce - with 45% of survey respondents saying that women aren’t encouraged to consider STEM careers when at school and also an indication of the importance of representation of female engineers in encouraging more young women into such careers. #careersinstem #stemeducation #womeninstem #engineeringcareers #careerseducation

Today, tomorrow, and every day, Grace May champions women.   Despite the significant progress of women in STEM careers, they still only represent 29% of the STEM workforce.   However, the journey to gender equality in #tech roles begins from a young age…   The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) highlights in their article, 45% of women are not encouraged to consider STEM careers in school. Even the smallest measure can have extraordinary impact.
