#WEChamps | On June 8-10, Georgian women entrepreneurs visited Baku, fostering collaboration with Azerbaijani counterparts. Highlights include forum on empowerment and policy, tours of local businesses, and the signing of an MoU between Georgian and Azerbaijani health-focused businesses. The visit strengthens regional economic and cultural ties. This initiative was supported by the "Strengthening the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem by Networking Regional Women’s Chambers of Commerce and Business Associations" (WE-Champs) project, funded by the U.S. Department of State - Secretary's Office of Global Women's Issues. #WomenInBusiness #Collaboration Center for International Private Enterprise

In 2020 the Commission adopted a new EU Roma strategic framework for the period up to 2030, which was followed by a Council Recommendation in 2021. This initiative is to report on implementation of the national Roma strategic frameworks. It will assess Member States’ measures to promote equality, inclusion and participation of Roma, with a focus on the areas for improvement identified in the Commission’s 2023 assessment.

On the back of this monumental news, we must be careful in Ireland and everywhere to ensure we remember politicians are human beings. Whatever your political leanings, anyone being courageous enough to step into public service deserves respect. The world is sadly going through a politics of division through a desire to weaponize difference. This has led to many politicians bearing the brunt of a cultural shift where people feel like they can say or do anything to them. Criticism is always OK - that's part of the package - but politicians often face something beyond that nowadays which is unjust. This has also led to a subtle re-emergence of a cultural adoration of self-serving leadership, not just across politics but across different sectors. This is an iconography and ideology that goes back to some of the darkest times of our collective human history and this is something we must repel. The world must be shaped by service leadership, not self-serving leadership. If we're not careful, the real leadership talent we need in the political sector will turn its back on the offering of service leadership. So, thank you to An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar for his work on behalf of our island for it takes courage to put your hand up for such work nowadays. Big days ahead for Ireland....let's not lose sight of our values folks. Onwards.

On the same day that Mexico elected its first woman President (Sunday, June 2nd), Iceland elected its second woman President, Halla Johansdottir, a businesswoman who had chaired the Chamber of Commerce and was the CEO of the B Team, a coalition of top CEOs interested in climate and social change. An entrepreneur, she formed an investment fund, Audur Capital, which integrated social responsibility and women's perspectives into finance. As with Mexico, she won against another woman, the former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, for a 4-year term -- the result in both countries of larger numbers of women in political leadership roles. The lesson here is that if a country has a critical mass of women in government, women presidents will emerge. But unlike Mexico whose President really runs this country of 130 million, Iceland's President is largely a ceremonial figure who unites this country of 400,000 and must stay out of politics. Before you say, 'Wow, so many women in charge!", let me tell you that there are only 17 women Presidents or only 8.8% of all 193 nations, and many are ceremonial. Only 5 have actual executive power. Those who really run countries are Prime Ministers of which there are 13. Combining both Presidents and Prime Ministers, only 15.5% hold these titles in 2024 even though half of the world's citizens are women. We are far from political parity. When the then New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave a speech at the UN General Assembly in 2018 embracing kindness, it changed my whole perspective on leadership. I hadn’t realised, until that moment, that I had been holding back from putting myself forward as a leader because I was worried I wouldn’t be allowed to be kind. I thought I’d have to make the ‘tough decisions’ that so often end up in diminishing the people that work in our teams, that I would always have to side with management on decisions I knew were wrong for people, that essentially I would need to be ‘mean’. But Ardern changed all that in one moment. Here was a woman who had made it to the pinnacle of leadership in her country, and she had done it with kindness. I was blown away. What misconceptions do you have about leadership that you are carrying because that is what you have always seen around you? How has that held you back from speaking with what you know is right, and kind? Our organisations have been dominated by a masculine approach to leadership for a long time, for many of us, it was all we ever knew. It sunk in deep. I’m looking forward to hearing you raise your voice and challenging those things that you know, deep down, to be out of alignment with what is true and good for the community around you. The latest landmark in Latin America's political landscape has been etched with Claudia Sheinbaum's recent victory in #Mexico. Since Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, this marks the first time in the country's more than 200-year modern history that a woman has ascended to the presidency. Latin America is no stranger to female political leadership, as is depicted in our latest #VisualPulse. From appointing gender-diverse cabinets to promoting social policies aimed at benefiting women and families, many of these leaders have not only shattered glass ceilings but have also charted new courses for their respective countries. Regarding the newly elected president of Mexico, it is evident that she has a significant to-do list ahead of her, from managing the US-Mexico bilateral relationship to immigration and rising cartel violence. This year, we celebrate International Women’s Day with a nod to the two female CEOs within our company. It’s no secret that the world of security is a male-dominated one. While a female CEO is not impossible to find, two female CEOs sharing executive duties is almost impossible to find. While there is not a single chemical, biological or physiological thing which prevents women from achieving the apex of success the way that men have, there are well-known factors (evolutionary, social and cultural) which have historically influenced the skew still present in today’s world of work. While matters are certainly improving with legislative reform and a concerted push by various players to even the scale and remove the ‘glass ceiling’, this growth growth is not equitable or evident across all societies. Here in Trinidad & Tobago, TSZ is doing groundbreaking work in bulldozing the playing field within its organisation, one player at a time, exerting the kind of microcosmic influence imperative for the answer to the gender barrier question. Naturally, we dove deeper to get their CEOs’ perspectives on what leading the pack in the local industry is like, in their own words. No, really. These are actually their own words. 👭One year ago today, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) launched the Feminist Development Policy. This policy aims to address the structural causes, level out unequal power relations and make a contribution to enabling equal participation by all people. It is not a “policy by women for women” but promotes global justice, prosperity and social cohesion.
