Did you know that just last year, United Way’s 2-1-1 Navigation Specialists answered more than 200,000 requests for help in our region – that’s one call every three minutes! Be that lifeline for the next caller by making a gift today: https://ow.ly/hYiM50S7sir And for one mother experiencing a medical emergency, one call to our Navigation Center changed her life. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without United Way for Greater Austin.” Just 24 hours earlier, Mariana couldn’t ignore the increasing lower abdominal pain any longer. Her fear: a postpartum infection. She knew without treatment, her body could go into sepsis, a serious and life-threatening condition. However, it wasn’t as simple as a quick visit to the doctor. She was new to Greater Austin and unable to speak English, with no family in town and no transportation. Fearing a medical emergency, Mariana called United Way’s 2-1-1 helpline. The highly trained, professional 2-1-1 Navigation Specialist immediately connected Mariana to a Community Health Worker who transported her to the hospital, assisted with medical forms, interpreted for her, and helped put her on the road to a full recovery. Because of this, she was able to care for her baby and return to work.

Assembling a care team for a loved one can feel overwhelming. The good news is that there are many professionals who can play a valuable role in the long-term care process. But first, you need to know who they are and what they can provide. It’s important to understand that no two care stories are the same. Some begin when an emergency strikes – like a serious illness, hospitalization, or a fall. Other times, you may see common signs that support is going to be necessary, and thus begin to plan in advance. Signs that in-home support is necessary may include: -Difficulty with planning/organizational tasks -More than everyday forgetfulness -Trouble with ambulation -General isolation and loneliness (this is an important and often forgotten emotional component of care planning!) The number of infants who die before their first birthday continues to be a cause for concern in central Ohio. Central Ohio's hospital systems, Mount Carmel Health, Nationwide Children's Hospital, OhioHealth, and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, together with CelebrateOne and many community partners, are committed to eliminating preventable sleep-related infant deaths, decreasing preterm births, addressing social health-related factors and improving service delivery to reduce infant mortality and racial disparities in birth outcomes. We have made important progress over the last six years, but our work is not complete. Clinical leaders from central Ohio's hospital systems co-authored a letter to the community, shedding light on root causes of infant deaths and asking the community at large to offer help, attention, and compassion as we work together to meet the needs of new parents. https://loom.ly/XxdiMzA Mount Carmel Health System Nationwide Children's Hospital OhioHealth The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center CelebrateOne #CentralOhioHospitalCouncil #COHC #BetterTogether #ReduceInfantMortality #Safesleep #CityOfColumbus #InfantMortalityPrevention #InfantMortalityAwareness #ColumbusDispatch #MaternalHealth #PrenatalCare
