Is comedy really ever just comedy anymore? I questioned this when “The Bear” was nominated for Best Comedy at the Golden Globes. I’m seeing: • Comedy-Drama – The Bear • Action Comedy – Brooklyn Nine-Nine • Dark Comedy – Fleabag • Feel Good Comedy – Ted Lasso • Romantic Comedy – The Mindy Project • Historical Comedy – The Great • Standup Comedy – Ricky Gervais’ Armageddon. (I enjoyed this; just be prepared to be offended.) • While we’re here…Satirical Comedy –The Office All the genres are blending today, but I think this makes for better entertainment. I often hear the word “ Dramedy” as an interesting way to describe some of these shows/movies. What do you think? When having Stand Up Comedy at your company party or event, less is often more. Attending a comedy night at the club, its usual to see a 2 hour show with some break in the middle. At your party, we don't have that much time. Stand Up is just part of the entertainment that evening and we don't have an hour or even 45 minutes for a long performance. This is why we recommend most performances are either 15 minutes or 25 minutes. 15 if you need a quick hit of laughs or if it's a sit down event where the audience will have a longer attention span, 25 minutes works great. When comedians perform at private events they have specially crafted sets which are designed to be short, sharp and funny. A good comedian doesn't need 5 minutes to warm up, they are throwing out clever punchlines from the get-go.

How are stand-up comedians faring with the boom in social media comedy? Bloomberg has it that stand-up comedy trebled in 10 years. Much of this is due to COVID-19 and the fact that comedians had no work, so resorted to SM. That aside, NETFLIX has played a role, offering up-and-coming comedians a platform to reach the world. But how do NETFLIX find their comedy stars? Why, social media, of course! With social media now, the days of sitcom stars being the only ones out there doing their bit for comedy are history. Much hard work and plenty of posts gives social media comedians access to a wider audience, and the pressure is not on them to make everyone laugh all at once. They build up their following in their own time. There is pressure though… SM platforms censor bad language and sensitive issues. So, what’s a man, or girl, to do? Censor their posts and lose engagement? Algorithms too, put pressure on SM comedians to come up with regular posts that are short and succinct. But, there’s enough silver to cross your palm and make a living on SM, and many are happy just to stay there and reap the rewards. The future of stand up comedy is secure 🔥 This weekend I went back to the roots of Stand Up Company and hosted a stand up comedy workshop on stage performance and storytelling for this crazy bunch of aspiring comedians 😁 What are 4 comedy insights from my early days, that helped me become a better speaker: ✅ Recognition: More nodding = more laughing. People love to hear about things they know, think and feel. ✅ Simplicity: If you can't present your 60min keynote in 60 seconds when asked, go back to the drawing board. ✅ Confidence: You lead, the audience must follow.
