RIP Roger Kastel. Back when movie posters were indeed an art form. Hand-drawn and beautifully rendered. Stuff like this made movies feel BIG. Almost event-like. (See the works of Bob Peak and Drew Struzan for more.) In an age where competition is everything and how you present your product is even more crucial - I'd love to see studios get back to this type of marketing & promotion with more rich dimension and "pop" to assets like this. What makes a good Christmas Film? Is it Santa? Is it Penguins? Is it Presents? That is always up for debate and interpretation. Die Hard gets the same debate (it is a Christmas film by the way and I'll hotly debate that!) Coming up with an idea for a branded Christmas film can be tricky as you have to think of three things: ● It has to have a Christmas message of some kind, whether its family or giving back or similar ● It has to represent the brand in some capacity - product placement for example ● It has to get people talking Moore & Wright who is owned by Bowers Group used to make a toolchest many many years ago and a couple of years back, we were contacted by someone who restored one. That gave me the inspiration behind this story and we pitched it to the management team and we got given the go-ahead. We believe this is the first of its kind in the metrology industry, maybe even the quality control industry. With most, if not all Christmas ads being B2C, this being primarily B2B puts it in a unique slot. Directing and shooting this was both highly tense but also majorly rewarding. The budget allowed me to rent an ARRI Alexa Mini with JDC Xtal Anamorphics which has been a bucket list setup for a long time, and the combination was absolutely perfect in achieving this timeless, dreamy vibe. Had the pleasure of attending the Employee Premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at the Warner Bros lot, courtesy of Wendy Ruiz. Thought I'd share my thoughts now that the opening weekend buzz has simmered down. (Light spoilers ahead) In a landscape of mixed reviews, I honestly believe Furiosa to be the best film of the year, so far. The storytelling was both captivating and fresh, offering a glimpse into Furiosa's resilient journey and the formidable figures who shaped her. Tying it back to Fury Road, where she returns to find her home vanished, added a layer of devastation to her already compelling narrative. George Miller's world-building once again shines through with gripping action and unapologetic brutality. One scene that particularly struck me was a war rig fight scene that was shot from the side, reminiscent of side-scrolling games like Mario. It was a visually stunning perspective with an array of moving parts, showcasing the film's impeccable cinematography. To me, what sets Furiosa apart, especially in the realm of female-led films, is its nuanced approach to romance. Instead of succumbing to tired tropes, the film introduces a love-interest without allowing it to overshadow Furiosa's journey. There's no on-screen intimacy of any kind, leaving the depth of their connection open to interpretation. This deliberate choice keeps the focus squarely on Furiosa's character development, highlighting her evolution from a solitary warrior to someone willing to embrace companionship on her terms. Furiosa offers a refreshing take on relationships, underscoring that love interests aren't the ultimate goal for every protagonist. It's a realistic portrayal that resonated deeply with me. While this might seem relatively trivial in a sci-fi action affair, it’s important here because it was the largest indoor explosion ever filmed at the time.
