Hopefully this support letter for the potential candidates who need scholarship motivates somebody to fund it. This is a story of someone who wished they received support. Chapter 1 -We regret to inform you that we will not be considering your application further at this time🙃 After RIBA Part 1 from University of Portsmouth in 2019 I interviewed for the Part 2 Apprenticeship at Foster + Partners, although was unsuccessful. I jumped straight onto the Part 2 course after an interview with the MArch 1 Year Coordinator at PSA_Portsmouth School of Architecture who appreciated my portfolio and the exceptional circumstances. Thanks for believing in me, Dan Blott. Chapter 2 -Unfortunately we are not looking to fill any positions at this time😔 After a mentally disturbing Part 2 tenure while being away from home during the pandemic and not being able to support myself financially, I still got through and all I had to show for experience was 2 years of sales that I did during Part 1, a portfolio with 'original' work that I worked on beyond my capacity, a couple firsts in the research units. It was more disturbing when I saw those peers with apparently substandard work get entry into the industry 😕. This year other capable ex-peers have become qualified architects, while I have sent 750 applications trying to get a foot in the door. Chapter 3 +After reading n number of Unfortunately's I developed my aptitude for learning new skills while trying to satisfy multiple job requirements.  2 years after graduating and still not employed in architecture, I managed to retain and revise these skills. I regularly read on industry-relevant info, case-studies and self direct CPD's in: Acoustics Development in use of timber in construction Quality Management in Architecture Richard Sennett's writing Building Regs Construction and Project Management Circularity and Sustainability Passivhaus Material knowledge I learn one thing daily from 'Cyrill M. Harris's Dictionary for Architecture and Construction'. I revise software skills to stay relevant and try to learn new ones including : AutoCAD Revit Rhino Various 3D Visualisation software Various data analysis plugins Even started learning programming in Python You'd ask how does this relate? Please read through. 🙂 +I got rejected from architecture so I gained these skills: Team management Supervisory skills Site management Design management Project management Communication: considerate, contextual, effective, open. Final Chapter I might not be great at all these skills, but I am at one: learning anything in a specified period of time. Despite all of that, I don't have a basic Part 2 job because there was something missing.. guidance and support regarding what to do next. As today marks my first day back at Anglia Ruskin Uni since the Christmas break, I thought I would start a series of weekly posts that summaries key topics and discussions that take place this term! The modules I’m undertaking are: housing & planning, and research design & methods. Over the course of this term, the housing & planning module will comprise of topics including: housing supply & delivery, new settlements and urban growth, affordable and social housing, global perspectives, and sustainable housing. This week began with an introduction lecture with discussions on what factors contribute to making a place a ‘home’, drawing on our personal experiences and ideas on what a good home should be like. Our group came up with factors such as family, safety, community, culture & heritage, green spaces, and comfort. We also discussed barriers that prevents people from the opportunity of having a home, which included discrimination & inequality, affordability, the housing market, planning permission, and geographical constraints. The second discussion was based on how the planning system interacts with housing. We talked extensively about a wide range of topics, including planning policy (national, regional & local - including local plans and 5 year housing land supply), and public engagement and discussions with statutory consultees. The research design and methods module is based on the research methods used to undertake research in planning, which will enable me to complete my MSc dissertation next year. This weekly summary will probably focus less on this module as it is more individual. I hope that planners (and my non-planning friends!) find the topics that will be mentioned in this series interesting and topical. I will try and post a short summary once a week. Thanks! Interesting angle on the ol’ “town and gown” dynamic: University as anchor tenant to help spur #UrbanRevitalization. Couple key quotes: - "To work, a university can’t just be IN downtown, it needs to become OF downtown, putting the needs of the city first." - "Duke’s strategy was to catalyze redevelopment, not monopolize it. Instead of buying a building, they offered to lease space in it, contingent on another tenant leasing a space as well." I also appreciated the balanced tone of the piece (e.g. the very last paragraph: “Economic development will always be a game of tradeoffs,” and the acknowledgment of challenges around maintaining #HousingAffordability).
