Starvation: Anatomy of ‘a very cruel, slow death’
With man-made famines threatening both Sudan and Gaza, Al Jazeera breaks down how the body succumbs to starvation.
By Simon Speakman Cordall - 27 Mar 2024
People in Gaza and Sudan face famine on a catastrophic scale, the UN and humanitarian organisations are warning.
In Gaza, 27 people – 23 of them children – have starved to death as a result of what international bodies say is Israel’s use of hunger as a weapon of war.
And in Sudan, the World Food Programme (WFP) is already receiving reports of people starving to death and is on course to be “the world’s worst hunger crisis”, a UN briefing to the Security Council warned in March of this year.
What is ‘starvation’?
Starvation, in a few words, is when the human body is deprived of food for so long that it suffers and, often, dies.
“It’s a very cruel, slow death,” Dr Omar Abdel-Mannan, a British-Egyptian paediatrician and neurologist who has volunteered in Gaza said. “You basically just waste away.”
For ethical reasons, scientists have been unable to pinpoint how long starvation takes to kill. However, based on observation, it is thought the human body can last up to three weeks without food.
When is someone classified as starving?
Starvation occurs over three stages.
The first starts as early as a skipped meal; the second comes with any prolonged period of fasting when the body relies upon stored fats for energy.
The third, and often fatal, stage is when all stored fats have been depleted and the body turns to bone and muscle as sources of energy.
What happens to the body?
In the early stages, as food is first denied, the body feeds on a starchy substance called glycogen, which is stored in the liver.
Initially, the body relies upon glycogen, before turning to fats and then muscles, causing the body to shrink and the starving person to assume a gaunt, hollow-cheeked look.
The brain is deprived of the energy it requires to function, so the starving person experiences irritability, mood swings and difficulty concentrating.
“Basically, the body just slows down, as it pulls energy from other organs to keep the brain and the heart going,” Abdel-Mannan explained.
The heart’s function will also be affected eventually, with a corresponding drop in blood pressure and pulse.

A way toward regional peace. A way forward so starving people can be fed:
The USA should be removed from the UN Security Council for aiding and abetting genoc!de. As a terrorist occupying force, I$rael should be cut off from the $14 Billion plus welfare that it receives annually from Uncle Sam (and our taxes). The US actively opposes the security of Palestinian civilians and should no longer sit on the UNSC with over-riding, abused, veto power.
There is a mechanism for removal of “Security” Council members whose nations fail by promoting genocide.
Article 6 of the UN Charter allows for any member of the UN to be expelled – even if they sit on the Security Council – for persistently violating the principles of the United Nations.
The General Assembly should unite on this point and remove the USA from the UN, for the good of all.
Let us move the UN headquarters, fund the UN independently, and admit First Nations (Native American nations and others) to the new UN!
As a US citizen, I do not support my nation’s genoc!dal ways.
As someone else recently wrote:
…✍🏻In the 75 years since the UN was founded, no country has violated the principles of the UN Charter more than the United States of America.
This is exemplified in the case of Palestine, where a ceasefire and an end to the genocide is persistently prevented by the United States, which cynically uses its veto power in the Security Council to overrule the will of the majority.
Symbolic demonstrations are important, but focused action with a tangible goal is even more so.
This is why it is time to demand the invocation of Article 6 – to expel the U.S. from the United Nations.
…
We call for the expulsion of the United States from the United Nations because that is a real objective that may not only result in a ceasefire in Gaza but can also invite much-needed reform of the United Nations and Security Council.
To this end, we invite all those who desire an end to the tyranny of injustice to join our movement to Invoke the 6th
Let’s demand that our leaders rule with justice and integrity. Let’s demand that all member states have a meaningful voice on the international stage. Let’s act for change. Let’s do it now!
It is time for the world to say enough is enough…

Hamza Abu Toha, a resident of Gaza, has shared the following news:
"Tonight, God blessed me with a baby boy. He was born in one of the destroyed rooms in the destroyed Kamal Adwan Hospital.
Before Ali was born, I tried hard to provide a container of newborn milk, but I did not find anything. So I said that perhaps the hospital on the day of birth would provide him with a container of milk.
After his birth, his mother wanted to breastfeed him, but no milk came out due to the mother’s malnutrition. I went to the nursery department and did not find anything. I went everywhere in the hospital and could not find any milk. After seven hours, one of the women gave me an injection with a little milk in it. We in the north are under siege."
This Mother's Day in Gaza, pregnant women are not receiving the nutrition and healthcare they need, making them more susceptible to disease and increasing risks of death during childbirth.
Newborns are dying because of a lack of healthcare amid ongoing fighting and bombings, displacement, and stress-induced premature births.
The Israeli Government’s siege and denial of essential aid must end. There is simply no excuse for the shockingly inadequate levels of aid entering Gaza.
We are ready to scale up our response as soon as it's possible to do so, but we can't do this while the fighting continues.
We are calling for an immediate and definitive #CeasefireNOW so a full scale up of aid can get into Gaza to stop starvation, dehydration and disease.

My fellow Americans, please wake up. Israel is dragging us into war with Iran, & possibly WW3, to distract us from the genocide & ethnic cleansing it's committing with OUR tax dollars. 🙏Please write & call your representatives to demand they stop this madness.

👉Please listen to U. of Chicago Prof. John Mearsheimer explain how Israel is trying to ethnically cleanse both Gaza & the West Bank, & drag us into a war with Iran, which could easily spiral into WW3. 👉What would you do if someone stole or demolished your house & livelihood, killed some of your family, & left the rest of you with nothing to live in the squalor of a refugee camp? That is what Israel did to over 750K Palestinians in 1948, over 300K in 1967, over 250K since 1967, & MORE EVERY YEAR – FOR THE CRIME OF NOT BEING JEWISH.
👉Most of the families in Gaza owned homes & farms where Israeli cities & towns are now, which Israel stole from them. Many even still have their front door keys. & NOW ISRAEL IS DOING IT TO THEM FOR THE 2ND TIME.

In Gaza “Hunger and malnutrition have already claimed an estimated 27 young lives, and for many more, it may be too late to reverse the excruciating toll that starvation takes on small, growing bodies.
Nuzha Awad’s triplets, Malek, Khader and Moustafa, born two months before the war began… did not stop crying as she spoke to the Guardian.
She fled Gaza City when food and formula for her babies began to run out;
in … a makeshift tent in central town of
Deir al-Balah,
she is still desperately afraid for their futures.
“At this age a child should weigh eight kilos. They weigh two kilos … They don’t have thighs yet.
At this stage they are supposed to be crawling and preparing to walk…” she said.
“Are these the arms of an eight-month-old child?
… It’s death there, death, death. Death in the literal meaning of the word.”
Malnutrition is spreading at record pace among children, according to the World Food Programme.
More than 90% of young children and pregnant and breastfeeding women are subsisting on two or fewer food groups – mainly bread – with no access to fruit, vegetables, milk or proteins.
Almost half of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million is under 18, and the effects of starvation may follow those who survive for the rest of their lives …

Malnutrition Awareness Week: The Crisis in Gaza
This week marks Malnutrition Awareness Week. As a dietitian and a Palestinian, I notice that very few dietitians are discussing the ongoing famine in Gaza. This region, already crippled by years of conflict, blockade, and instability, is now facing a deepening humanitarian crisis.
Malnutrition in Gaza isn’t just a consequence of food scarcity, it is a symptom of a broader crisis. Years of restricted access to essential supplies, clean water, and healthcare have left countless families unable to meet basic nutritional needs. Children are suffering the most. Chronic malnutrition is leading to stunted growth, developmental delays, and, in the worst cases, death. Beyond the physical harm, the emotional toll on families who cannot nourish their loved ones is devastating.
What’s even more alarming is the lack of acknowledgment and empathy from some officials, who wrongly assume that malnutrition only looks one way. Who assume that there is no real malnutrition crisis because some individuals "look" healthy. They fail to recognize the unique nutritional needs of growing children compared to adults and that not everyone who's malnourished will look the same, leaving the true scale of the problem under-addressed and not covered enough in the media.
As dietitians, it’s our duty to raise awareness of the devastating effects of war and occupation on public health. During Malnutrition Awareness Week, let's remember those whose nutritional needs are being overshadowed by the more visible aspects of conflict. Advocacy must go beyond temporary aid, focusing on long-term solutions that ensure access to food, clean water, and healthcare in war-torn areas like Gaza.
A ceasefire is desperately needed, but until political action is taken, we can still make a difference. Please consider donating to HEALPalestine to help provide food for Palestinian children, or simply share this message to spread awareness.

Diarrhea remains one of the leading causes of death among children under 5, killing around 443,832 children every year (WHO). This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for intervention.
To reduce the number of deaths amongst children under 5 in Nigeria, AYGF through the ANRiN Project has distributed Zinc/ORS commodities to children under 5 in 420 wards across 39 LGAs in Kogi, Niger, and Katsina states in the last 3 years.
The Zinc/ORS helps to significantly reduce dehydration in children suffering from diarrhea.
AYGF is dedicated to improving maternal and child health in Nigeria.

Watching this video and reading this caption, one can't help but wonder: does this truly exist in 2024? The ongoing suffering in Gaza makes us see and realize that despite the revolutions we have witnessed, talked about, and worked towards for a better world and global peace, perhaps it's all just on paper or merely visually represented by the construction of impressive buildings and the creation of modern cities. This is the 'evolution' we boast of, but it's not evolution in our minds or our ways of thinking. It's a testament to the failure of humanity to progress not just materially, but morally and empathetically.
It's a painful realization that amidst the advancements of our time, basic human needs are not merely unmet, but intentionally deprived from Gaza people. People, including children and pregnant women, are being deliberately left to die. The situation in Gaza forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about the state of our world. The fact that individuals are left to endure famine, disease, and deliberate violence in plain sight speaks volumes about the state of humanity. It's a heartbreaking reality that leaves one speechless.
After 6 months of conflict in Gaza, nearly one million Palestinians are on the brink of famine.
"Malnutrition, dehydration, and starvation target the most vulnerable,” said Natalia Anguera, Action Against Hunger’s Head of Operations for the Middle East. “The risk is much higher for young children. Women in Gaza are struggling to breastfeed."
That's why our teams are launching a program in Gaza to provide children and breastfeeding women with the vital nutrients they need to survive.

I read an article today about women in Afghanistan who are dehydrated from not drinking water during the day as they have no toilets to use. They wait for darkness to relieve themselves - when it’s safer for them. The men use the toilets. There are cultural sensitivities but we need to understand that half the population don’t have access to safe sanitary facilities let alone period products. I can’t begin to imagine how women in conflict zones manage.
