In today’s global health landscape, the leadership from African countries in public-private partnerships is crucial for driving effective innovation to reach the patients in need. On May 27th, in concomitance with the #WorldHealthAssembly, a strategic event organized by Merck together with the Cercle Diplomatique De Genève, brought together key stakeholders from international organizations, public and private sectors, and distinguished countries’ representatives. The event drew attention on critical aspects, including the burden of neglected tropical diseases, towards promoting local sustainability and self-sufficiency for addressing local public health challenges. The Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium program showed a model that led to the development of a new pediatric treatment option for preschoolers with #schistosomiasis. Beyond creating local clinical excellence and building local manufacturing capacity, the program also showed the need for close collaboration with and engagement from the African countries to enable sustainable and equitable accessibility to health innovations. AIGHD Executive Director Anna Vassall recently co-hosted a panel together with Antoni Plasencia from Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) at #ECTMIH2023's morning plenary on the 22nd of November. We have a Tweet thread which covered the most essential items discussed during the plenary but in summary: 1. Dr. Jan Paehler discussed the EU's new Global Health strategy and focused on the growth of the Global Health EDCTP3 programmes in both funding and scope. This is part of the European Commission's commitments to the 'Health-in-all-policies' approach. 2. During the panel discussion, Lisa Goerlitz from the Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung (DSW) brought up the EU's new pharmaceutical strategy and how it crucially misses a global health component and perspective. She also mentions the importance of EU citizens to contact their MEPs if they wish to be better represented in the EU's Global Health Strategy. 3. Dr. Constance Assohou-Luty from the World Health Organization discussed the unique alignment between the European Union, African Union, and the World Health Organization to promote Africa's New Public Health Order. In particular, she discusses the push to develop local capacity in medicine production and to develop the local workforce. 4. The audience also questioned the gap in HORIZON Europe programming when trying to address Planetary Health but Dr. Jan specified that HORIZON is structured in a manner where projects focused on a specific aspect of Global Health are brought together thematically. These processes help build a broad network on which we can base effects and interventions for #planetaryhealth. We hope you enjoyed reading our short coverage of this year's #ECTMIH2023 morning plenary session on the EU's new Global Health Strategy.

Clinical trials are the cornerstone of high-quality health research towards the development of products that serve global public health needs. This #ClinicalTrialsDay, we exhort health product developers to align their product development pipelines with public health priorities. Through the Emerging Technologies, Research Prioritisation and Support Unit of the WHO, we work to support and optimize R&D for health products in various ways: 👩💻 ICTRP is the largest repository of data on clinical trials happening around the world https://lnkd.in/eTrk7uNs 📈 We analyse what trials are happening where and make this available for everyone in the global observatory on health R&D https://lnkd.in/eUD8uCwW 👩🔬 Data and experts come together to set global research priorities for the greatest public health impact https://lnkd.in/ejyE9rJW 💊 We support Target Product Profiles, the characteristics of specific health products needed https://lnkd.in/eDqze9a8 💉 And we identify the research evidence needed, including from clinical trials, to develop strong policy recommendations to improve public health. https://lnkd.in/e4kecw77 I was once honored to be part of a clinical trial for anti-malarial treatments in the Solomon Islands. This photo is from the thousands upon thousands of blood spots collected from participants. This clinical trials day we shout our support to clinical triallists gathering high quality evidence around the world on which we can build better health for all, and to the constant work to improve clinical trials by WHO and beyond Anna Laura Ross, Ghassan Karam, MSc, Mercedes Perez Gonzalez, Amina Haouala, Vasee Moorthy, Wei Zhang

We are thrilled to announce our latest journal publication, now available in JMIR Publications's Journal of Medical Internet Research: “Tanzania’s and Germany’s Digital Health Strategies and Their Consistency With the World Health Organization’s Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020-2025: Comparative Policy Analysis”. This research provides a comparative analysis of Tanzania’s and Germany's digital health strategies in line with the World Health Organization's Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020-2025. We examined the alignment of these national strategies with global health objectives, highlighting areas of strength and opportunities for further development. As we navigate the complexities of digital health in the global landscape, this publication offers valuable insights into creating more inclusive, comprehensive digital health strategies. It underlines the critical need for regular updates and context-specific adaptations to effectively integrate emerging technologies in health care systems worldwide. This work is a collaboration between Felix Holl, FAMIA, Jennifer Kircher, and Walter Swoboda from the DigiHealth Institute with Felix Sukums from MUHAS Digital Health and Innovation Alliance and Attila Hertelendy, Ph.D. from Florida International University. 🔍 Dive into our findings and explore how national digital health strategies can better align with global health guidelines to enhance health care delivery across borders. Your thoughts and discussions on this are highly welcomed!
