✨ Ramadan Tips For Teachers ✨ Hello Friends👋 ✨🌙 Happy Ramadan✨🌙 Today is the first day of Ramadan, which is one of the holiest months for Muslims around the 🌎 As teachers who strive to create inclusive environments, we need to be mindful and understanding of students who will be fasting. Ramadan involves fasting from dawn until sunset 🌅 as an act of worship and reflection 💭 During this time, it’s important to recognise the significance of fasting in the lives of our students. As teachers, we can make small adjustments to our schedules to support them. This might mean being flexible with exam dates or considering alternative activities for students who may find intense physical activities challenging while fasting😉 Moreover, being aware of the potential effects of fasting on students’ energy levels and concentration can guide us in providing the right kind of support. Simple gestures such as offering a quiet space for prayer or allowing students to take short breaks when needed can go a long way in showing empathy and respect for their religious practices🙂 By creating an environment that acknowledges and supports students during Ramadan, we not only foster inclusivity but also demonstrate our commitment to understanding and valuing diverse religious beliefs. Such a joyful moment of #CulturallyResponsiveTeaching! I'm teaching an evening class at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. As Ramadan started, I've noticed that my Muslim students who are observing Ramadan were having a hard time. Iftar would start during our lesson, meaning my students who would normally be breaking their fast with a big meal with family, now had to sit another hour and a half in class before heading home to eat. I have a lot of respect for this class of part-timers who show up for classes after a whole day of teaching and commuting. Adding an extended fasting period to that seemed very tough. So I brought in a box of dates, and handed them out just after sunset, so my Muslim students could get a nourishing snack during class. Dates are a traditional way to break the fast during Ramadan. Not only did this make my Muslim students happy, but all my students were grateful for this unexpected boost of energy. And they were all better able to focus afterwards. Win-win! For our next class, one week later, several students showed up with chocolate eggs, and one of my Muslim students brought me this lovely box of home-made chebakia and baklava as a thank you. I was touched. We tend to think that university students should figure it all out by themselves. But #CulturallyResponsiveTeaching is no less imporant in higher education than it is in primary schools. And a little goes a long way... #Ramadan #CulturallyResponsiveTeaching #teachertraining
