La 16e conférence quadriennale d’ONU commerce et développement (CNUCED), ou CNUCED16, se tiendra à la fin de l'année 2025 sur le thème « Façonner l'avenir : mener une transformation économique durable dans un monde en mutation ». L'annonce a été faite par la Secrétaire générale Rebeca Grynspan dans son discours lors de la réunion de haut niveau du Conseil du commerce et du développement à Genève le 16 septembre. « La CNUCED16 sera cruciale pour dire concrètement comment cette institution, grâce à sa composition universelle, sa mémoire, son savoir et son mandat, est en mesure de façonner ce nouvel avenir », a déclaré Mme Grynspan aux ambassadeurs, aux organisations non gouvernementales et aux organismes intergouvernementaux présents. Le Conseil du commerce et du développement est l'organe directeur de la CNUCED entre les conférences ministérielles et supervise les activités de l'organisation. The 16th quadrennial conference of UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), or UNCTAD16, is set to take place in late 2025, themed "Shaping the future: Driving sustainable economic transformation for a changing world". The announcement came from Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan in her address to a high-level Trade and Development Board meeting in Geneva on 16 September. “UNCTAD16 will be crucial to say with concrete deeds how this institution, because of its universal membership, because of its memory, because of its knowledge and because of its mandate, is positioned to shape this new future,” Ms Grynspan told ambassadors, non-governmental organizations and intergovernmental bodies in attendance. The Trade and Development Board acts as UNCTAD's governing body in between ministerial conferences, overseeing activities of the organization. Kicking off its 71st session, the board lauds Secretary-General Grynspan’s leadership in steering UNCTAD through complex reforms and raising the visibility and impact of the organization’s work in shaping the international development agenda. In 2022, global exports of creative services surged to $1.4 trillion, while creative goods totalled $713 billion, up by 29% and 19%, respectively, from 2017. Developing economies primarily export creative goods, while developed ones account for 80% of creative services exports. However, the gap in the latter has slowly decreased over the past decade, with the share of developing countries doubling to 20% between 2010 and 2022. Global trade trends turned positive in the first quarter of 2024, according to the latest Global Trade Update from UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The value of trade in goods increased by around 1% quarter-over-quarter, while trade in services by about 1.5%. This surge, fueled by positive trade dynamics for the United States and developing countries, particularly large Asian developing economies, is expected to add approximately $250 billion to goods trade and $100 billion to services trade in the first half of 2024 compared to the second half of 2023. Global GDP growth forecasts remain at around 3% for 2024, with the short-term trade outlook being cautiously optimistic. If positive trends persist, global trade in 2024 could reach almost $32 trillion, though it is unlikely to surpass the record levels seen in 2022. Small island developing States (SIDS) are increasingly vulnerable due to the combined effects of climate change and limited economic capacity. These challenges make them more exposed to external crises, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, rising debt levels and soaring import costs. Such vulnerabilities limit their ability to produce goods and services and access global markets, placing them at a disadvantage compared to more developed economies. To achieve sustainable development and build resilience, SIDS need support to strengthen their economies, diversify industries and better withstand future shocks. At the Summit of the Future, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and its partners will discuss strategies for helping SIDS integrate into global and regional value chains. Global foreign direct investment (FDI) fell by 2% to $1.3 trillion in 2023 amid an economic slowdown and rising geopolitical tensions, according to the World Investment Report 2024. But the report highlights that the decline exceeds 10% when excluding the large swings in investment flows in a few European conduit economies. The downturn in project finance affected sustainable development, with new funding for Sustainable Development Goals sectors dropping over 10%, particularly in agrifood and water. This hampers efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda and calls for urgent policy action to revamp sustainable development finance. The report emphasizes that business facilitation and digital government solutions can address low investment by creating a transparent and streamlined environment. It highlights significant growth in online services and information portals, saying such tools also support broader digital government development, benefiting developing nations in particular.
