𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐢𝐬. I’m back in UN Geneva for UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) 60th anniversary - more than just a celebration, it’s a moment to gather and discuss on both the path behind us and the road forward. Rebeca Grynspan, the Executive Secretary General of UNCTAD, highlighted a crucial point in her opening speech:  🗣️ We live - as a matter of fact - in a time of 𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺, yet this doesn't ncessarily translate into 𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮. Instead, we're witnessing fragmentation and a high risk of sustainable development getting "lost in the cacophony of competing interests." 💫 But here's the key takeaway: while multipolarity isn't a choice, 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐈𝐒 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞. It must be our choice. The strategic move underscores the organization's commitment to greater impact, with a new, clearer visual identity aiming to better reflect its work and values and to amplify its voice on behalf of developing countries. "Visible, transformational change is our objective. We are celebrating UNCTAD’s achievements of the past 60 years as a forward-looking, renewed organization, building on our legacy but ready to respond to the new complexities of the global economy. 💭Day 1 #AAC2023 'Focus on Timor-Leste: economy, equality, and development. 📉 “A lack of economic diversification is often associated with increased vulnerability to external shocks that can undermine prospects for longer-term economic growth.” (World Trade Organization) 🛢🌏 Guteriano Neves, Research and Analytics Manager for PROSIVU, spoke at the Australasian AID Conference about Timor-Leste's dependence on petroleum revenues while reinforcing the urgency of economic diversification into other non-oil sectors to bring about inclusive growth, job creation, poverty reduction, and fiscal sustainability. Guteriano argued that economic diversification requires institutional reform. For this to be successful in Timor-Leste, we need to consider… 🔹 economic diversification and inclusive economic growth is a complex and long-term undertaking 🔹 providing support to Timor-Leste to improve the quality of institutional strengthening and governance 🔹 public engagement through local civil society 🔹 work together with youth and emerging leaders 🔹 flexibility to adjust in a rapidly changing context.
