A new policy paper from International IDEA highlights the importance of progressing SDG16 to achieve the United Nations 2030 Agenda. In particular the paper considers the role of corruption in preventing progress. The study involved a scoping review of the literature on SDG 16, finding 19 occurrences suggesting a strong connection between corruption and health, and 18 occurrences linking corruption and inequality. Effective public financial management plays a key role in combating corruption and reducing inequality: - Significant investment is required to strengthen institutions and governance systems, which are crucial for achieving not only SDG 16 but also for enabling progress across other SDGs. - Public financial management strategies must prioritize funding for initiatives that promote transparency, reduce corruption, and support justice systems, as these are vital for sustainable development. In the fall of 2024, the UN hopes to agree on a Pact for the Future, to be negotiated by Germany and Namibia. Will this be a purely political negotiation, or will it be based on evidence and research? Research shows that #evaluations are a key tool used for evidence-based policy discussions. The UN has compiled a wealth of useful evaluations across the system over the last 10 years, which should hopefully provide concrete evidence for policy positions by member states. Let me say it! My case was handled by a “weak NCP” (Brazil) with the support of a “faithful squire NCP” (Italy), as the Italian government is the “controlling shareholder” of Eni. Despite the facts being fully proven, Eni refused to carry out “due diligence”, disregarding and neglecting the guidelines in the "OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Business Conduct". Furthermore, the Final Declaration undeniably privileged, favored and benefited Eni to my detriment. The private sector is an essential contributor to the policymaking process and is facing increased societal expectations to engage more, not less, in finding solutions to society’s most pressing issues. Growing expectations on companies to engage, however, also come with growing expectations on how to engage. Therefore, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD - OCDE) has launched the Trusted #Dialogue on Getting #Influence Right, aiming to identify core principles on Responsible Corporate #Lobbying and Political Engagement. On behalf of EPACA - The European Public Affairs Consultancies' Association, I was delighted to participate in the third roundtable which took place in Paris, and to share our experiences with the EU #Transparency Register and the EPACA #Code of Conduct for public affairs professionals. We will continue working on this together with the OECD and look forward to sharing the conclusions of their report. Very pleased to see international organisations are starting to embrace and promote the added societal value of #lobbying when done so in a transparent and #ethical manner.

At its inception, the East African Community (EAC) adopted regional integration as one of its primary goals. The EAC Treaty recommends the adoption of incrementalism towards political, economic, and social integration through establishing customs union, common market, monitory union, and ultimately political federation. Though EAC envisioned an establishment of a confederation by 2023, a large majority of Kenyans (58%) have heard “nothing” or “very small amount” about the envisioned East African Federation. It is however notable that the majority of Kenyans (52%) “approve” or “strongly approve” the free movement of goods, services, and labour within the East African Community. While political representation should act as the genuine link between the people and the regional body, only 29% of Kenyans have heard “some” or “a great deal “of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), while a strong majority (68%) have heard “nothing” or “a small amount” about the legislative body. With EAC identified as the most integrated compared to other regional economic blocks, the 2021 data by Afrobarometer raises concerns on whether the integration is taking place at the state level while leaving out East Africans who are the primary agents and beneficiaries of sustainable Eastafricanization.
