While not widely known, St. Nicholas, among his many patronages includes brewers. In fact, he is the patron saint of brewers. Really. I’m sure of it. I think. The way we think of St. Nick in America begins with the publication of Twas the Night Before Christmas: A Visit From St, Nicholas by Clement C. Moore in 1823. First published in 1823, it is largely responsible for the conception of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today, including his physical appearance, the night of his visit, his mode of transportation, the number and names of his reindeer, and the tradition that he brings toys to children. Prior to the poem, American ideas about St. Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors varied considerably. The poem has influenced ideas about St. Nicholas and Santa Claus beyond the United States to the rest of the Anglosphere and the world. There you have it — we Americans taking credit for another institution and its origins. We’re good at this 🤓 We’re still trying to come up with a believable narrative on how America invented the wheel. I went to a farmer's market last Friday in Polson, Montana and experienced what Donald Miller's StoryBrand theory espouses: humans (especially consumers) run from confusion. The booths that caught and kept my attention were the booths with the fewest items. I looked at most booths and somewhat subconsciously thought, 'I don't have a category for this booth. There's everything from souvenir tee shirts to fresh cherries to hand-carved trinkets. Let's keep moving.' The booths that DID capture and retain my attention were super simple: 1. a gentleman selling local honey. That was it. 2. a gentleman selling a clever beer opener. That was it. 3. a gentleman selling mushrooms. That was it. 4. a lady selling handmade lolly pops. Well, she actually was selling coffee cups, too, but those were tucked kinda outta sight. When my kids spent their 'tourist money' from their grandfather, do you wanna guess the two final contenders? Honey and lolly pops. Wanna guess the eventual winner? Lolly pops. Thanks to my fellow Rustonite, Len Woods, for teaching me more about StoryBrand. I've got a long way to go in becoming a StoryBrand. I was out of the office yesterday, so here are three #TuesdaySparks to take place of the #MondaySparks - three unique and innovative ideas, menu items, operators, etc. to get the creative juices flowing as we head into the week: 1. Maeve Webster and I often talk about the importance of aroma and scent, with consumers ranking smell nearly as high as taste when making food decisions. I thought about that when we were both at a coffee shop in Hudson, NY, last week that had a drink called a Mad Dandy on the menu. When we asked what it was, he pointed us to a package of it on the shelf - it's a coffee alternative made from mushrooms and dandelion roots. Sensing what we were both thinking - it sounded more healthy than delicious - he quickly brought out a bag and had us smell it. Instead of smelling like dust, it smelled almost like a graham cracker. It was enough to convince Maeve to take a pack home. Here's a package that could clearly use one of those freshness valves used on coffee bags. How can you incorporate aroma more into the purchase decision? 2. I love that Mad Dandy is also self aware, calling itself the "mushroom coffee that actually tastes good." It made me think of this ad campaign from Plonts. In contrast to hyper-earnest feel-good companies and products that promise the world (or at least to save it), Plonts says that eating its cheese "probably won't save the planet," in fact. The cheese just tastes good (though it says it can't hurt). “It’s really frustrating to be up against this massive problem where, you know, realistically, our individual sacrifices aren’t going to move the needle on climate change,” Sophie Moscovici-Troyka, brand manager at Plonts, told Grist. “At the same time, you see a lot of mission-driven companies putting the pressure on consumerism as the answer to climate change, which has all sorts of paradoxes within it. We wanted to poke fun at that tension.” How can we be a little more honest and upfront with customers, even a little cheeky? (https://lnkd.in/gFGudZYW) 3. Brat Summer is over and Strega Nona fall is in. "A pasta-making witch from a beloved 1975 fable is being hailed online as the blueprint for a very specific strain of autumnal coziness," says The New York Times. Cozy, carefree lifestyles are clearly still resonating with consumers - the idea of getting away from back-to-the-office mandates, endless global strife, and a looming presidential election and replacing it all with bowls of pasta and reading a book by the fire sounds pretty attractive (https://lnkd.in/gDcD_tRZ). Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop was the original inspiration for Santa Claus . In the early 1900’s there were many different versions of Santa Claus around the world, a tall man , an elf —there was even a scary Claus. In 1931, Coca‑Cola hired designer named Sundblom to paint Santa for Christmas advertisements. Those paintings established Santa as a warm, happy character with a big beard and white and red dress. The image became so popular and became the modern identitfy of Santa. How did Coke benefit out of this ? Seeing Santa in red and white links those colors and feelings of happiness with Coca-Cola.
