Reflecting on Visit to the Women's Education and Research Centre in Colombo Last week, as part of the FLMBaRI organised by CREA, I had the extraordinary opportunity to visit the Women's Education and Research Centre (WERC) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This visit was not just an eye-opener but a deep dive into the nuanced intersections of caste, class, and religion and their profound impact on women's lives in South Asia. Stepping into the oldest feminist-run library in Sri Lanka, I was surrounded by a wealth of knowledge. The shelves were lined with books authored by feminist writers from Sri Lanka and around the globe, each telling stories of resilience, struggle, and the fight for equality. Our interaction with the WERC team was profoundly insightful. We delved into critical issues affecting women, from menstrual health and hygiene practices in rural and urban spaces to the autonomy and bodily rights of women. The discussions also covered how conflict shapes women's lives, influencing their decision-making and affecting their well-being. One of the most striking aspects of our visit was the shared understanding of how women are marginalized across nation-states. Despite the varied issues we face, they are all rooted in patriarchal structures that span across borders. Our discussions underscored the importance of understanding the power dynamics, history, and politics of each country and how patriarchal structures are institutionalized and ingrained within us. The call for cross-border solidarity and the sharing of learnings emerged as a pivotal theme. It's clear that one of the first steps towards supporting one another is to share our experiences, understand the unique challenges we face, and unite in our efforts to dismantle the patriarchal structures that bind us. This visit was a reminder of the power of collective action and the importance of feminist spaces like WERC that continue to inspire and educate. Let's carry forward the spirit of solidarity, learning, and support as we work towards a more equitable world for all women. #feminism #solidarity #womensrights #education #research #srilanka #FLMBaRI #CREA #empowerment #socialjustice
WERC was happy to host a group of vibrant South Asian leaders for a knowledge-sharing session where we learnt about the common and different issues we face as feminist activists in South Asia. This half-day site visit was part of CREA's annual week-long Feminist Leadership, Movement Building and Rights Institute for 30 passionate activists from South Asia.

I’m closing out #WomensHistoryMonth by spotlighting our AVP and DEI leader, Sucheta Misra, who recently shared her insights in Black Enterprise Magazine 📰 Sucheta talks through the challenges that women of color face in the workplace, as well as why a lack of leadership role models results in a struggle to be authentic in their own leadership style. I learned a lot from the article—I recommend you go have a read.

It's depressing but also refreshing to see this ⬇️ "This edition of Nonprofit Quarterly Magazine is a resounding no in the face of the travesty that Black women leaders, and other women of color leaders, have been contending with in the sector. As White-founded organizational leadership transitions out of what has more often than not been blatantly unexamined and relatively ungoverned roles in organizations, often on the brink of collapse, incoming Black women leaders are discovering that now there will be not only governance but obstructive, extreme oversight, micromanagement, unreasonable expectations, territorialism, mistrust, little to no support, lack of basic decency and humanity, and the list continues—sometimes from the board, sometimes from the staff, and sometimes from both…and that’s just internally. Externally, there is also misbehavior from funders and from other leaders. There is no place allowed, it seems, to breathe; to rest; to grow; to make mistakes, learn, and recalibrate; to be. The sector, as a number of leaders describe in this edition, is perpetrating death by a thousand cuts." LINK: https://lnkd.in/dZ7B84Bf

Audre Lorde and other women of color feminists and womanists have been extremely influential in our work here at Indy Equity. They influence how we think of possibilities of equity in organizations and help us see clear gaps in current diversity management research. In our fellowship, the Indy Collective Leadership Circle, this month we are reading bell hooks to learn how to incorporate an ethic of love into our work. If you haven’t read Audre Lorde, bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins, Chela Sandoval, or Gloria Anzaldúa, and let me go ahead and add adrienne maree brown to the list, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of something. #masteryourmindset #indyequitycollaborative
