If you're looking to make the move to a career in #instructionaldesign, you may find yourself wondering just exactly what it is instructional designers do. I was there too when I was looking to leave the k-12 teaching world behind. I discovered instructional design, and found a few videos of instructional designers describing what their work is like, but I always seemed to come away with more questions. Now that I'm an instructional designer in a large public school district, I want to help those wondering about ID to get a good picture of what an ID job looks like. So, Devlin Peck allowed me to create a video for his YouTube channel to do just that. Of course, the role can look different depending on the industry, the size of the ID team, and a variety of other factors, but I think the video will give prospective IDs a good idea of what the job might look like for them. Here are 3 things Senior Instructional Designers do... That newbie instructional designers don't. 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗗: considers more than courses to solve performance gaps 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗶𝗲 𝗜𝗗: builds comprehensive training for every performance gap 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗗: leads the team and the direction of a project based on their expertise 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗶𝗲 𝗜𝗗: Let the SME tell them what to do 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗗: designs problem-centered instruction 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗶𝗲 𝗜𝗗: creates info dumps So remember, you're working 40 hours a week. Get a degree or certificate in Instructional Design. While skills in other fields (yes even in classroom teaching) are transferrable, they don't prepare you to be successful in this landscape. I would say those coming from a classroom teaching background have a leg up but they aren't ready, yet. Do the work--- and you will see the results. And MOST IMPORTANTLY if you were lucky enough to be gifted a position as an ID and you don't have any education (especially classroom teaching!) background then humble yourself while working with those that have--learn and grow from them. SMEs often get promoted as IDs and while I disagree with this, I respect anyone who is able to be humble and recognize what they don't know.

Notes of an instructional designer… One of the things I love most about instructional design is how it brings together so many different elements. It’s truly cross-disciplinary and draws from a wide range of fields, such as: ·      Design thinking ·      Cognitive science ·      Technology ·      Learning science ·      Psychology ·      The art of communication ·      Educational theory ·      Graphic design ·      Multimedia development ·      User experience design I'm continually amazed by how much depth there is to this job… and all that complexity? It’s an endless source of inspiration for me. There's always something new to explore and learn. Sure, it can be challenging at times… but that’s what makes being an instructional designer so captivating and rewarding!
