At UMass Memorial Health, we honor National Disability Independence Day and the critical work being done to promote equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This day commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. The ADA serves as a foundational civil rights law for Americans with disabilities, acknowledging the long history of discrimination and ensuring their access to economic and civic opportunities. UMass Memorial values the unique abilities, skills, and talents that all caregivers with disabilities bring to our workplace. However, those with “invisible” disabilities, such as mental disorders, cognitive dysfunctions and chronic pain still face significant challenges in achieving fairness and accommodation, particularly in the workplace. UMass Memorial Health will continue to foster greater acceptance and protection for all caregivers with disabilities, whether visible or not.
